Dear All,

I have been working here on and off for 7 or 8 years but I'm not so well travelled in this country and now have decided that I want to bring my daughter (14 years old) here on holiday.Probably 10 days on the beach , then 10 days inland and then back to the beach again.I'd like to make a nice introduction to the country as it will be the 1st time she has travelled outside Europe and I want her to love it and have a really positive experience. We will have 3 weeks here , can anyone recommend where to go except for the obvious (ie Koh Samui / Pukhet etc) ? I want to avoid seedy areas so but also where there are a few home comforts so she doesn't have to eat fried rice or pad thai every day.If any of you out there have any suggestions , nice family hotels , relitavely undiscovered small towns on the coast or just any friendly resort / hotel recommendations it would be greatly appreciated. Our budget for accomodation will be about 2000 / 2500 Baht / day.

Thanks in advance !

I brought my father and older sister a couple years back (maybe2008/09) and they were particularly fond of Chiang mai/Chaiang rai. Mae hong son would be a nice touch ..not pricey and right on the lake. This would be my first choice hands down. I live in Isaan and enjoy our quiet country farm but i'm sure a 14 year old girl would rather be at central world in bkk vai sky train and maybe a stop at foodland to eat at took la dee cafe.

sometime the simple everyday things are what the best memories are made of. This was the case for my american family.

Thai beaches are not really made for teenage girls, atleast not for a long stay but im no expert on anything.

Best of luck

I had a very similar situation a couple of years back, with my (then 16 year old) daughter from N.Z.

I can highly recommend the island of Samet (Koh Samet), which is within a couple of hours from the Airport (just south of the City of Rayong). You must make sure to book some accommodation on the "Big-Beach", which I think is called 'Sah-Keow-beach'.

This beach is about 1 km long and the sand is superbly fine and the sea is transparently clear & gorgeous.

At night there are many 'on the beach' restaurants set-up and they serve superb seafood, but one can also have steak, pizzas etc.

It's also very pleasant to walk down the beach, at night and take-in the wonderful views and the sounds from the very numerous beach-bars (there's even a Ragea-Pub).

Then there the "Disco" - a very quant small Disco, where a superb Filipino-band performs nightly and this place is reminiscent of the time when Discos firtst started to appear in the world: it's brilliant and they play great music (no Acid-Rock crap; but stuff even 50+ers can relate to.

The other attractive thing about Koh Samet is that it is very inexpensive (in most cases even cheaper than Pattaya !).

During the day it's beach; swimming; taking a tour on a glass-bottomed boat; Banana-Boat; Doughnut and you can even rent small sailing-catamarans here.

Friend; if you take your little girl there; she WILL have a heck-of-a-good time, and so will you.

BTW: there are NO sexy-bars; Go-Go places at all on this beautiful little island.

If you would like more specific info. on this island, simply drop me a message, okay ?

Cheers,

Jaap

she is a teenager;

I STRONGLY suggest u ask her what SHE wants to do,

Some girls love the beach, other hate it, some like to travel some don't, others just want a room with fast internet.

as one with a 18 year old, that works best

I have taken my daughter ( we lived in Thailand till she headed off to the states for university) she loved to travel so we have been all over thailand, Bali, Nepal, Singapore, Laos and Camboda, France and Greece. Till she was 14 she loved the beach than hated it.

Prehaps rather than the full time in Thailand drop over to Angkor wat for 4 days or down to singapore for Sentosa.

14 year olds are a bitch!!!

You have made this sound so appealing having always given the islands a miss thinking that they are all full of 'full moon party' type people, I am going to give Koh Samet a try, thanks for the heads up.

Thanks to all for all your advice , Koh Samet seems a good starting point and also the North seems to be a good idea.Things are taking shape in my head and I'm really looking forward to it.

Thanks again to all.

As long as you are at Koh Samet, close by is the Rayong Aquarium, which is actually in Ban Phe. Ban Phe is where you will be able to catch the ferry to Koh Samet. It is nicer than Underwater World in Pattaya, and a pleasure to go through.

Has i said at first; have u asked her what she would like to do??

most 14 year olds dont want to hang out on a beach without their friends an than sit in a restaurant at night or some shit bar with old people

Having only been to Ko Samet once and that was a LONG time ago i never even considered taking my daughter there as i knew she would be bored within 1 day

My daughter is now 17 but thinking back to when she was 14 and thinking whether not only her but would any of her friends want to stay on Ko Samet, they were a pretty varied group but I can't think of any of them lasting more than a day . "Dad, where are the night markets for my designer knock-offs ?" "Dad, why are they playing all this trance music on the beach, soooo uncool"

I'm with you, ask her or spend the holiday in hell. A lively resort , Chiang Mai, trekking if she's the type but ask.....

Seems like a good point not to stay in a 'relaxing' (maybe boring) place too long, I'm thinking to not stay in one place too long unless she wants to and I definately want to get up to Chaind Mai and the North in the hills.
