webfact
Hot-headed somtam vendor wanted for Phuket shooting Phuket Gazette PHUKET: -- Phuket Police are on the lookout for a somtam (spicy Thai salad) vendor following a local building supplies shop staffer being shot in the head at point-blank range with a homemade zip gun south of Phuket Town last night. Somjit Chueajan, 21, from Lampang province in northern Thailand, remains in the intensive care unit at Vachira Hospital Phuket, in Phuket Town, hospital staff confirmed this morning. He was drinking beer with workmates at a mom-and-pop store opposite the Naka Weekend Market (map here) at 7:30pm when the attack occurred. “Somjit was in the store taking a beer from the fridge when a man entered the store and shot him in the head with a homemade gun. The assailant then fled the scene,” Wichit Police Superintendent Chaowalit Petchsripia explained. Police have yet to be informed of what type of projectile was fired into – and remains embedded in – Somjit’s skull. “We have also yet to determine the cause of shooting,” Col Wanchai added. Questioning of witnesses to the shooting led police to a home at the nearby Anuphas Manorom housing estate. “The suspect was not at home. We questioned his wife and found out that the suspect’s name is Kreetha Jirasereeamorn, 46,” Col Wanchai said. “He owns a somtam shop in front of Naka Temple – and apparently he is hot tempered,” he added. Like many things here, guns are crazy expensive and not within the reach of a somtam vendor.

Udox
Many people here have trouble even counting up to ten - so how the hell does a som-tam seller manufacture a home made gun that actually works and fires (whatever it fires) I am sure these things don't resemble a Glock or Smith & Wesson - but to manufacture a working firearm, is pretty impressive and sure as hell knocks spots off a slingshot and lead ball ! SparklingCascades
A "hot-tempered" Thai, a "home made gun", a mysterious "projectile" and a "spicy Thai salad". How exotic. One more case for Thailand's Inspector Clouseau.

These home made guns are no more than a tube with some sort of firing pin, single shot, manual load. Hardly any great engineering feat. Yes working firearm but not a real gun. Go to rural India or Pakistan. The level of education, and I guess you mean literacy and mathematics, is much lower than Thailand but they are proficient in making home made guns. Zip guns are relatively easy to make and used a lot in the school thug clashes here too. Education by learning a skil, which they are happy to put into practice. I spose he will have to bribe his way out of attempted murder charges with life time supply of Tom-Sum to the corrupt police as the bribe payment..
