Uninstalled Itunes As Requested.....now Cannot Re-Install Itunes.

I've got an iMac OS X version 10.6.8 and is a few years old.

Problem started when suddenly I noticed 95% of my songs on iTunes had vanished and when I synced my ipod the songs on it also vanished.

So I go to time machine as I have an external backup disc, after much trial and error, I manage to get all my songs back......phew!

Next I try to sync the ipod so as to get all the songs back on it, then I get a box comes up "Error iTunes (-42408) more clicking and I get a message that suggests I uninstall iTunes then reinstall iTunes.

Ok easy enough...there are a few warning signs along the way but I proceed boldly and ok iTunes have been uninstalled.

Next step, the iTunes download website.....make sure it is for Mac OS X (check) hit the download button, almost instantly the site says thankyou for the download....but nothing has downloaded.

I tried a safe boot startup, still no joy.

Anyone please help I would be really appreciative.

Any more info required please ask.

Cheers.

Might be time to do a clean install of your OS and applications. I know. Big pain in the ass, that takes forever. I also had a problem with 10.6.8 and had to start over twice.

I'm running 10.7.5 now and only one issue. When I wiped my PRAM, it wouldn't boot. Lucky I use Carbon Cloner. Just wiped then re cloner my internal drive. All the software I use now will run on this OS, although there are a couple they say they won't. If I restart it in 32 bit mode I can install them and then they work... When or if you do a clean install, use Carbon Cloner and clone your fresh OS and applications. If you ever encounter the same problem, you have a much less time consuming solution to it. Time Machine is okay, but won't save you the time that Carbon Cloner will. You can even run off the external cloned drive to repair the internal... Good luck!

EDIT:

Another thing to try before you wipe your drive and start over is to run disc utilities. Verify, then if no problem, run disc permissions. If there is a problem you need to boot off an external drive and run repair.

Try Atunes they never take music off.

iTunes is part of the Mac OS installation disc. The OP may have deleted more than just iTunes...

Jimi007...........Thank you very much for your reply, unfortunately I need for you to explain it to me as though I am a 6 year old. How do I do a clean install? When I purchased my "toy" no discs were supplied, everything was pre-installed.

I am but a mere novice at this sort of stuff, you are speaking way above my intelligence factor.

Please come back to me and if you do not mind, take me by the hand and guide me step by step.....I am really stupid at this stuff, and if I get my iTunes back, I guarantee I will track you down and buy you as many beers as you can consume in one night.

Cheers.

Ok I've managed to run disc utilities and all seems ok.

Then I tried downloading iTunes again....still no joy.

So I had a wild idea and tried restoring from the time machine....ok I've got iTunes back..BUT it still won't open and recognise my ipod when I attach it.

So this means I have no way of editing all the stuff on my ipod.

Any help would be appreciated.

Cheers.

I am neither an apple fan or regular user apart from grudgingly using i-tunes for my i-pod so this is only a suggestion but the download hasn't gone into a download folder somewhere else on the computer that you need to find and then download from .

Thanks xen, I actually have iTunes back but when I open it I get a message that says Error iTunes (-42408) and when I connect my ipod to the computer it should normally open up in iTunes, but it doesn't. I just get an icon of the ipod on the side of my screen.

I've tried going to different troubleshooting sites but as always my error number cannot be found.

Cheers.

Sorry that I didn't explain very well. A clean install involves using disc utilities and wiping clean your hard drive, then re-installing the operating system and applications. I'm not sure what other applications you use on your machine. If you only use the applications that come with the operating system, it shouldn't too bad. But since you don't have any install disc, you will have to go buy one. I'm not sure if OS 10.6.8 is still available for sale or not. It is a dual layer DVD, so it won't fit on a normal DVD, so not easy to bootleg. I have a copy on an external hard drive, if you live in Phuket I could help you. Otherwise you may have to go to a repair shop that knows Macs well to do it. You at least have your Time Machine back up, correct? So that should have your data and application back up. But, reinstalling corrupted data from Time Machine may not fix the problem... That's why a clean reinstall of the OS and applications is preferred. Then it runs like new again.

Another thought. When is the last time you ran software update? It's important to do. Click the Apple in the stop left of your screen, then software update.. But to me it sounds like you may have deleted something you shouldn't have. iTunes is part of Mac OS. It should just be updated along with everything else in the system... Although it was an iTunes update that crashed my OS 10.6.8. You can update your OS in the Appstore on your Mac by the way. It's pretty cheap. Like I said, I can do everything on OS 10.7.5. But I'm not going to update to the newest system until I have to. Looks like only 10.8 is available in the App store... You would have to check the compatibility with your computer.

Thanks Jim, I just tried loading this http://support.apple.com/kb/TS3258 and seemed ok until after I restarted my computer and opened iTunes....got the same error message again and also does not recognise my ipod.

I live out in the sticks in Ratchaburi province about 3 hours drive from BKK, so not really an option for me to lug this heavy 27" iMac around.

I have regularly checked for updates, so latest iTunes is 10.6.3.

So when you say I can update my OS in the Appstore...that is online No? Or do I have to take the machine to an actual store...sorry for sounding stupid, but I really am a dummy with these things.

If so, then to update the OS do I have to wipe clean my hard drive first? and then I am guessing....it would be a matter of restoring all my stuff from time machine. But what about restoring my music, would that corrupt the new OS again?

Cheers.

Yes you can update your OS online. When I looked it was $19.95 from the US store for OS X 10.8. But I don't know what other applications you use. Your music I think should be fine. But there is no way for me to tell you that it is. I've never had a problem with my music files. I just find them and open them again. But I back up my music in files on external drives, not just iTunes or time machine, which I don't trust that much... Again, I think your problem was trying to delete iTunes in the first place. I've never done that. But as I also said, I had my OS X 10.6.8 crash after an iTunes update. I just looked and my iTunes and it is 11.0.1(12)... I'm also not sure what processor you're running or if it can use the latest OS. You need to do a bit of reading about how to do it yourself.

Ok I've found this http://www.digitaltr...-mountain-lion/ and so far it looks like my iMac may be suitable.

Number of cores 4

Memory 4 GB

Model identifier 11.3

They also recommend a bootable backup, looks like I'll need to do some shopping.

Any thoughts?

Cheers.

Yes, it looks as though it should work. If your iMac has a firewire 800 port, I would buy a firewire drive for your bootable backup, if you can find one. Other World Computing on the internet has them and I think they'll ship to Thailand. I would probably partition that disc, using disc utilities, one partition for the OS, then the rest as a backup and or media storage. You could also use Carbon Cloner to clone your new operating system and other apps. I believe they have started charging for the version that runs on Mountain Lion though. It was always free before. I just did a search for Mac OS 10.7.5 and it seems there is a free download: http://en.softonic.com/s/mac-os-x-version-10.7:mac I didn't download it from here, but it looks legit. Oh, it's a trial version... This one doesn't say it's a trial version: http://os-x-lion-1074.en.softonic.com/mac/download It's 10.7.4 After install run software update, it should bring it up to 10.7.5 and iTunes 11.

Thanks again for all your help Jim.

Might take me a while before I can get the hardware I need, and will tread very carefully.

Like an old tradesman's saying "measure twice, cut once".

Just an update......

Surprised myself by "finding" the original install discs that came with my iMac (didn't notice them at the time of purchase....too excited).

So used them...OS X 10.6.3......then a lot of my applications were locked out because they needed a later version...buggar!

So spent 18hours plus downloading update version 10.6.8, then get message that it can't be saved because it couldn't be found on the server......buggar!

Thought I would try another method, I have a program "iGetter" which is good for slow connections in downloading large files, all good until the installation I get a message that says, this version cannot be loaded because you do not have 10.6.7......Buggar! (another 18+ hours wasted).

So then I find 10.6.8 Combined.....Success! Ok I've got all my applications back and working, but I still have this annoying error -42408 when I open iTunes.

Much searching and I find many other users have the same problem after upgrading to version 11 in iTunes, so they downgrade back to 10.7 but still get the error message.

Then one guy finds this program called "Pacifest".....costs $20 US and using that to install ITunes magically fixes the error -42408.

So happy to get my machine back.

Just a couple of notes: when I went to disc utilities to do a clean install, it would only allow me to erase the "unused" areas on my disc, if I wanted to further upgrade and needed to wipe my disc (which at the moment I do not want to do), how do I do that...just for future reference.

Also it was recommended to do a disc verify etc. after using the Pacifest program.

I noticed that all my songs were duplicated in iTunes and there is no quick way to get rid of them, just had to painstakingly highlight every second song and delete.

Well that's my dilemma over now......until my next hiccup...

Cheers.
