BANGKOK, Jan 12 - Children flocked to Government House on Saturday and met with Prime Minister Yingluck Shinawatra, as the compound opened to the public on the occasion of the annual National Children's Day.

Children who visit Government House today are allowed to visit the office of the Prime Minister and have a chance to sit in the Prime Minister's chair, along with the usual activities which are organized on Children's Day every year.

Prime Minister Yingluck earlier inaugurated the national Children's Day event at nearby Sanam Suea-Pa, co-organised by the Ministry of Education and the national police bureau.

The premier's son, Supasek Amornchat, also accompanied his mother to the event.

Ms Yingluck addressed the crowd who joined the activity to give importance to children and youth, and give them public forums to think and express themselves creatively.

She urged the public to give importance to children every day, not only on Children's Day.

The premier pledged that the government will instruct all concerned ministries to work together to improve children's development from pregnancy until adulthood.

The activities at Sanam Suea-Pa today were conducted under this year's Children Day’s motto “Uphold Discipline, Enhance Knowledge, and Bring Thailand towards ASEAN”.

Children's Day events were also held by many public and private agencies including the army.

Army chief Gen Prayuth Chan-ocha opened the Children's Day activity at the headquarters of the Royal Thai Army in Bangkok, saying all armed forces see the importance of children and have prepared the event at their best.

One popular activity of the army's Children's Day event is the display of armaments. Gen Prayuth said children should be patient in learning to develop themselves, as the world is more free and without borders.

Similar activities were also held in army camps nationwide today, while other state agencies also organised the Children's Day event in their own manner.

In the restive south province of Narathiwat, Children's Day events were held amid tight security to ensure public safety as children and families gathered to enjoy their day. (MCOT online news)

Eight buses damaged in fire in Samut Prakan

The Nation

BANGKOK: -- Eight air-conditioned buses of a concessionaire of the Bangkok Mass Transit Authority were damaged in a massive fire late Friday night, police said.

The fire broke out while the buses were waiting for repairs at a garage inside an NGV gas station in Samut Prakan's Bangkaew district at 11:30 pm.

The fire engulfed six buses and slightly damaged two others. The buses belonged to Premium Management Co Ltd, which were used on two routes from Suwanabhumi to Lard Prao and Rangsit.

Police suspected that someone might sleep on a bus and dropped a burning cigarette butt, causing fire, or an electric short-circuit might occur because someone might be using an electric fan.

No one was injured in the blaze, which was put out by ten fire engines an hour later.

The damages were estimated at Bt20 million.
