BANGKOK: -- The fine for remaining in Thailand past the expiry date

of a permit to stay, currently 200 baht a day, will rise to 500 baht

a day with effect from March 15.

However, the maximum fine payable will remain the same, at 20,000

baht, Pol Lt Gen Suwat Thamrongsrisakul, Commander of the Immigration

Bureau, stated in a document posted in Thai on the Bureau's website.

The document gave no reason for the increase.

Is it a local intiative in Phuket?

Sometimes the different offices of the Immigration Police use different regulations.

Nongkai requires 800,000 on the bank PLUS an income of 800,000 for a retirement visa.

Maesai asks to present 10,000 Baht for another month's stay in Thailand and 20,000 for three months.

Phuket now supposedly starts with a draconic increase of the fine for overstay.

It is important to know the regulations which are applied by 'your own' immigration office.

Ok, overstay is a crime in Thailand which should be avoided to commit. That's not up for discussion.

The proportionality of the fine is another thing.

When you have to go each month it is easier to remember than when you have to go every three months. Be aware! It counts for re-entry as well for notification of stay.

Any more information on the subject?

Limbo.

Will anybody remember me on the sixth of March that it is time for a little trip again?

You will get a free ride from Chiang Rai if you have to go the same day!
