Senators reject Chalerm's idea of arming Kamnans in South

BANGKOK: -- The Senate meeting yesterday objected to Deputy Prime Minister Chalerm Yoobamrung's idea of arming kamnan and village headmen in the three southernmost provinces with machine guns.

Senators said the negative outcome of such a move would be more than any positive result.

Objecting to Chalerm's proposal, Senator Weerawit Khongsak said such highly destructive weapons should be given to officials well-trained and well-disciplined in shooting so as to prevent harm to innocent people out of misunderstanding. He said that as many officials' weapons were stolen and had gone missing, introducing more high-powered weapons in the region could aggravate the unrest. He said the government should work on limiting the number of war weapons in the region rather than increasing them.

Meanwhile, as Yala officials' investigations leaned towards a conclusion that RKK insurgents led by Usman Dorkhor had carried out the CCTV camera arson in Muang Yala on January 19, Army chief Gen Prayuth Chan-ocha urged for the CCTV systems to be integrated. A police investigation into the arson that destroyed 97 CCTV cameras in Yala's seven districts on January 14 was still ongoing,

Commenting on related agencies installing CCTV cameras in the region, Prayuth said it should be more united and systematic, and arranged into three zones based on risk level; the high-risk areas should have many more cameras and there should be people guarding them. He also expressed the view that insurgents were responsible for the camera arson, in an attempt to tamper with evidence of their crimes.

Meanwhile, Education permanent secretary Panita Kamphu na Ayutthaya yesterday held a meeting with teachers and school executives in the five southern border provinces to push for protection to teachers round the clock and install CCTV in risky areas by fiscal year 2013.

Is there a kamnan in the country who already doesn't have a private arsenal?

What else would you expect from Chalerm?

During the Chavalit administration the interior ministry spent a huge sum to provide handguns for all their officials throughout the country. Not long afterwards it transpired a good portion of the guns handed out went missing. The insurgents in the south must already be thinking how they can obtain those weapons should it come to pass.

Did the "idea" come to him during his recent alcohol binge in Malaysia where he went to discuss the Deep South issue?

Hes not sure, that part of the evening is a little blurry... he does remember it being a kick-ass party though, the pretties that were employed to.. err.. serve wine 'performed' quite well :)

Sounds like the NRA, let's arm the teachers statement.

What's to stop the teachers from being the shooter?

Look at Afghan, etc. We have native police shooting US/UK troops from the inside. If they can plant people into arm forces what's to stop them from planting people in school as teachers.

EXACTLY.

How to obtain the weapon? Just hold out their hands and "give, or we'll shoot" would do it. Or some would just miraculously goes missing / lost / misplaced (if CIA/FBI/MI6 can misplaced briefcases/ laptops, hard disks. Teachers can misplace weapons)

Jesus!....... is this guy for real?

Chalerm once again proving that stupidity knows no bounds

Chalerm is such a moroncrazy.gif

Havent seen Chalerm on TV since his party doplomatic mission to the south, nor seen an anouncement from him.

Would have expected a respected deputy PM to be out doing his bit for the PT BKK candidate.

Perhaps they have sent him away to dry out

Gee this idiot has he's finger on the pulse or trigger,these drips astound me, how idiots can climb into positions of power is beyond comprehension , this observation not only applies to Thailand but other countries as well.coffee1.gif

Yes it certainly does. Chalerm would be well matched with Dick Cheney, each a total embarassment to their respective countries.

Out of the box thinking! Arm the Kamnans, ensure they are well trained by highly skilled experienced police (preferably ex military) shooting experts and hey presto - more security. People scoffed at Einstein and the Wright bothers too!thumbsup.gif

And what happened to the apointment with Mahathir, chalerm said it was coming soon?

I hesitate to say he is being recalcitrant.

Perhaps he was hung over and slept through his appointed time.

One thing though. What has this got to do with a senate committee?

In regards to the OP, one can see how it pertains to the prescribed duties of the Senate to scrutinize and review when an exceptionally harebrained idea gets put forth.

Powers and Duties of the Senate

The Senate is designed as both a house of scrutiny and a house of review

The power and duties of the Senate as prescribed by the present Constitution may be summarized as follows:

(1) Legislation;

(2) Controlling the administration of State affairs;

(3) Giving approval for various important matters;

(4) Approval, recommendation or selection of persons to hold positions as prescribed by the Constitution;

(5) Removal of key persons from offices;

(6) Other powers and duties.

Jesus!....... is this guy for real?

Of course he is, it is a brilliant idea.

Simply turn the situation into an opportunity for increasing tourism. Just think of it, the biker gangs will flock here for some real adventure (they can have some Yul brynner lookalikes roam the streets for authenticity).

All of those cowboy fans will have a field day, although their colt 45's might not be a match for machine guns!!!

Mercenaries can get some practice in and think of the investment there will be in hospitals employing doctors from New York.........the possibilities are endless!!!

Thaksin can be employed as a consultant as he is familiar with this type of situation. It just goes on and on!!!

What else would you expect from Chalerm?

His drinking glass most be empty.
