PAD leaders face trial over 2008 unrest

BANGKOK: -- Public prosecutors filed charges yesterday against 15 yellow-shirt leaders for alleged criminal acts in connection with mass protests in 2008.

The Criminal Court ruled to assess the matters - listed on two writs - in one trial.

The trial will be separate from a judicial hearing for six leaders involved in the same protests.

Prosecutors have decided to try organisers of the rally in two batches based their alleged individual roles in two incidents - trespassing at Government House and blockading Parliament.

In the first batch, the lead defendants include Sondhi Limthongkul and Chamlong Srimuang. Their trial began on December 27.

In the second batch, Somsak Kosaisuk and Suriyasai Katasila are among the defendants.

The 15 yellow-shirts face key charges of property destruction, unlawful public assembly and inciting people to break the law. Of the 15, Somsak and Suriyasai face additional charges for trespassing at Government House, while the remaining 13 must answer to charges that stem from the blockade of Parliament.

After the charges were read out, the 15 pleaded not guilty.

The court approved bail, or temporary release, for the defendants pending the outcome of the judicial hearing.

Good. I hope it sets a precedent.

Good then make sure the precedent allows the same ruling for the red rabble leaders. This is just another 'dig' by PTP in manipulating legal process to take the heat off their gross mismanagement and conduct. It's simply a waste of effort, time and resources but hey, they control the purse strings of the contributions by the population. Wake up Thailand...

Fine as long as this does set a precedent and the red leaders are brought to justice, the list of charges against them should fill several pages.

However there could be a lot of breath holding to do before then as it has taken 4 years for this one to appear.

It's getting up to 3 years since the 2010 riots, so not long to wait.

What about the airport seizure? Defineable by many as an act of terrorism.

Do taxi drivers get charged with terrorism when ever they blockade airports?

Besides that, they have been charged over the airport seizure.

Indeed. Goose and Gander situation.

Several of the Red Shirt Leaders have criminal cases still pending from violence committed in 2007 and 2009 and 2010.

5+ years and still counting for cases waiting to be adjudicated against Red Shirt Leaders Veera Musigapong, Natthawut Saikua, Vipoothalaeng Pattanapoomthai, and Weng Tojirakarn.

They have also been fined 550 million baht but they haven't paid it, so being on bail is hardly a worry to them especially Sondhi, he is on 5 bail terms already.

Not one day to late !!

Not one day to late !!

Yes it is. These types of charges shouldn't take 4 years to get to court.

And yet, he is still with us facing any charges they wish to bring against him. Refreshing eh?

What a joke. Nobody is sentenced yet for occupying airports, it is much more interesting for crooked courts to sentence editors to lengthy jail sentences for speaking their mind, just like today. The Thai justice system is completely bankrupt.

All that shows is he doesn't have to worry when he owns the courts.
