Travellers Cheques

Featured Replies

Hello

Has anyone any experience of buying sterling travellers cheques in Thailand, travelling to the UK and then banking the cheques in a UK account?

Does it work? Is it allowed?

Any thoughts etc?

Thanks

Piece of cake. Siam Commercial Bank or Thai Farmers Bank offer both quite reasonable rates.

However, I'm not sure about AMEX they may even give a cheaper rate than visa..

Remember, that the maximum amount of cash, monetary instruments which are allowed to be taken out of Thailand is 20k US dollars.

Another option, you could open a bank account and withdraw the funds, by way of ATM, when you are in the UK. Just make sure that the account is set up for overseas withdrawals when you open it..

Thanks for your reply.

If I buy travellers cheques from a bank in British Sterling for say £50,000 and put them in my bag, some in my wife's bag, some in my pocket etc. can I then just go to my UK bank and say 'pay these in please'?

I've only ever dealt with travellers cheques in 1990's when I went to US and cached them as I needed them.

I'll ask my bank here also, as I live in UK now.

May be best option and at least I know exactly what they are worth.

Any thoughts?

If you're bringing more than 10,000 Euros into the UK you need to declare it.

Yes, sort of new that. Thanks for the heads up.

I'd rather transfer it via Thai bank to UK bank.

I know you can transfer $20,000 but more than that you need to get permission.

Just want it back via easiest means really without hassle.

Can't you transfer it in chunks of less than 20k?
