simple answer NO

Nothing has changed since this post. :o

This is still the case for all aliens, and includes the likes of "air guns, pellet guns, and BB guns" in fact any weapon powered by compressed air or gas. (see below)

Firearm permits are issued to individuals who can show cause as to why they need one, and are limited to a maximum calibre of 0.38" or 9mm The weapons are not licenced to carry on the person, (police and officials exempt) but to be carried in a bag or similar.

Below are the procedures and requirements for Thai owenership......

Are you sure that the guns are limited to 9mm? I've seen lots of ads for .44 Magnums and .45's. The 9mm is about the bottom of the caliber barrel for self-defense and that's with good hollowpoints (like the Winchester 147grain subsonic HP). For home defense, better get a pump 12 guage with #1 buckshot.

Feels like a room full of hitmen in here?

Just out of curiosity, why do you want the guns to shoot wives or buffallo? Also you must have done something wrong to be paranoid enough to carry a peice! :o

Witty replies welcomed...Clint Eastwood people.

Don't tell your wife or girl friend about your life insurance. I know two deceased who did and got hit. You can get hit for 10,000 baht and a secured hit from Thai military or police for 20,000 baht and it doesn't help much to have a .38 ... but I do... and the locals know I put 12 in the target head and could do so if confronted in my home or truck. But remember it only has six chambers and if the other guy or gal or ex-wife want to ... you're gone. If there is a contract on you ... you're gone! Best to be peaceful and unarmed. Stay sober...don't do drugs...and stay jay yen, jay dee.

I would love to be able to bring my shot gun to Thailand but so far it appears that I will not be allowed. :o

This is not for self protection; it was a gift to me for my 16th birthday (I am now 58) from my late father.

If anyone knows anything different please let me know.

You must apply for a permit to import firearms and ammunition. Once you have a permit you can bring them in duty free

For further information, contact the Customs Department, At-Narong Road, Klong Toey, Bangkok, 10110. Phone: +66 2249-0431 to 40, Fax +66 2249-2874

Doh! Where is my Commode.....

backOT, I hadn´t read the whole thread.

I understand that your father left you the thing, and it´s not for much else other than fun/sentimental value to you.

I just hate the dam.n things, having been shot once myself, and had a myriad friends get shot. I really really hate the things, and it is not through lack of knowledge of them, but rather, through a little more knowledge than I want.

Hence, I don´t like the idea of people having firearms at all. At least not in private life. :D

I once had a disgruntled ex-lover stick a piece in my belly at a bar because he thought I was his ex's new beau. I looked down at the gun embedded in my gut, looked up at him with a smile and calmly but forcefully told him to give me the gun. He did and turned around and left. I turned it over to the bartender.

Lots of ways to dis-arm a situation. :o

  • 4 months later...

SH1T, Sadly I have carried guns of one sort of another ( including some pretty big ones ) at work for nearly thirty years. It has gotten to the stage now where I actively avoid the range where ever possible as they no longer have the child like appeal which attracts the majority of folk who have never had to rely on them. I was hoping to avoid them as much as possible in retirement, but reading the number of wanna be John Wayne's on here................it seems they will never go away.

Without trying to fan a debate between cultures - - - I have always found it amazing to see the naive look of amazement most Ameircans exhibit when confronted by Europeans who are gobsmacked at the US love for weapons . . .

I spent a few months working in the Yemen in the late nineties at a time when carrying a weapon although not essential was advisable.

I ended up being kitted out with an AK47 and have to admit it didn't provide me with much comfort. I was so relieved to hand it back in at the end of my time there...

I guess what I'm trying to say is that I cannot see how a gun can give comfort to someone. I needed it and it scared the 'you know what' out of me.

I know of a few guys too that got hit, one definately by his wife's orders for a fortune - about $50,000!

If you marry someone from a poor backround, why risk it with such ridiculous sums of money.

Good advice.
