BANGKOK, Feb 4 – Army chief Prayuth Chan-ocha admitted today there were flaws in the security measures for farmers under the state’s rice planting revival scheme in the far South which resulted in the fatal shootings of two trainer farmers from the central plains and the wounding of 10 others in Pattani province last Friday.

Most of the surviving farmer trainers expressed their desire to return to their home provinces of Sing Buri and Suphan Buri. The farmers from the central region participated in a rehabilitation project for abandoned rice fields in the South under the sponsorship of the Southern Border Provinces Administration Centre (SBPAC).

Gen Prayuth said some agencies had assigned “outsiders” to work in the field without informing the authorities, leading to loopholes in the security system.

He expressed his appreciation to farmers from the central provinces who travelled South to help train farmers there plant rice.

Most southern farmers who switched from growing rice in their fields to rubber wanted to return to rice farming.

SBPAC funded the programme to revive rice farming – a scheme fully welcomed by many farmers some of whom rallied their support to the project over the weekend following the attack on trainer farmers.

The army chief said a new batch of 4,000 police officers will be dispatched to the far South in the next few months to help army and civil authorities provide safety to local residents. (MCOT online news)

Amazing Thailand can throw 4,000 more police into more army personnel and can't root out a few dissidents. Get some mercenaries in who know this stuff (infiltration) and stop wasting time and money as well as innocent peoples lives.

Rentamouth Chalerm states that the recruiting of police officers as teachers is a wonderful idea

Would it not be somewhat more effective to enlist both military and police personnel into the rice planting and farming scheme?

Most of the conscripts come from rural backgrounds as do many police personnel.Use their expertise rather than endangering the lives of innocent farmers who are not trained in the art of looking for trerrorist style attacks.

Or even better Chalerm should send his devils spawn offspring, you know the one who is good with a gun to teach farming along with personal protection skills. As an aside he would also indeed make a wonderful walking talking natural fertilizering agent too just like his father..

We need to fight fire with fire and hire some assassins of our own, do a decoy setup and keep em guessing. Time to use creative ways to kill off the terrorists and there are many willing people around the world who can deal with the bastards!

catch all the dissidents and pile them in the back of a truck until they suffocate

( oh, wait , they tried that already)

Trouble in the South. Why is it happening in the 1st place? One wonders what Thai people would think if another country gave some land belonging to Thailand to a third country?? I still believe that GB way back in 1909 was wrong to give land to Thailand (and Thailand was wrong to accept it without consultation) so it isn't surprising that Malays still believe the land is theirs. Growing rice on this land for Thai profit is surely like, a red rag to a bull to these Malays. I believe a little thought should have gone into this decision because it is bound to cause trouble. None of what I say here condones the slaughter that goes on but I wish the governments would go back in history to sort it out. This is only my point of view and likely many will disagree!coffee1.gif

Incompetence isn't the word! Oh wait! Yes it is.

No mention of who shot the farmers. One assumes that it was the military though could have been terroists. Which option is true is probably more important than the rest of the artticle.
