BANGKOK, Feb 8 -- Thailand’s ice sculpture team has won the 40th International Snow Sculpture Contest at the 64th Sapporo Snow Festival at Odori Park, northern Japan, February 5-11.

The Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT), which sponsored the team, said that the Thai team won first prize, followed by Finland, Indonesia, Sweden and Singapore respectively.

Eleven teams from across the globe participated in this year’s contest which was Thailand's 17th year in the competition.

newsjsThailand was represented by representatives from two leading hotels: Kusol Boonkobsongserm of The Shangri-la Hotel, Bangkok, Amnuaysak Srisuk from the Grand Hyatt Erawan Hotel and Kritsana Wongtes, an independent ice sculpture artist.

The theme of their work was “The Artist From The Wild" which depicts a group of elephants. The elephant is Thailand's symbol of the nation. They are also noted for their intelligence and memory.

Thai elephants can be taught various skills, including painting, which was unique and seen only in Thailand. (MCOT online news)

Cool....expect some would have given them odds of a Snowball's Chance in Thailand in winning. Congrats to the team.

Well done.

Excellence showing individuals can get it together. Now if some of that can rub off on the rest of the Thai populace...

WOW !!! - You took that opportunity to make one of the most tenuous links and bash Thailand !!!.. Unreal !!!...

What do you say while watching the Olympics ? Sir Chris Hoy wins yet another gold medal - if only the rest of the British populace took note there would be less crime on the street !!!...

Well done Indeed!

but

just wondering, where the hell did you practice?

Am i the only one seeing the irony here?

This is like the Jamaican Bobsled team winning gold, no?

Wasn't the original team politicians but for some reason the water would not freeze.

Well done team Thai :-)

Congrats Thai team! Well done.

Many luxury hotels, and even some large cruise ships have a resident ice-carver, or at least a talented part timer. It is not unusual for such a hotel to have a regular ( weekly) ice sculpture as a centrepiece for their grand buffet, or other event.

Thais did a cracking ice sculpture at our wedding a few years ago so it's no surprise to me they have the skill to do this.

Congrats.

Vote for Jumbo at the next election - assuming that they are also honest.

I look forward to a painting by a pachyderm hanging in the National Gallery or the Louvre.

First, I would like to say congratulations on the gentlemen's skills and award! There is something to say for the very talented artists in Thailand.

I do want to make note that MCOT stated incorrectly that Elephant in Thailand are the only ones that can paint, (among other talents). An elephant named Annabelle made her living by painting at the Zoo in Anchorage, Alaska for years. And there has been others Pachyderms... Sorry for slightly being off topic but I wished that when the news groups created their stories they would do the research....to much to ask? Maybe But again, I am happy for Thailand's Ice sculptures contestants, the winners of the contest.....It was a beautiful piece of Art!
