Rainmaking operations have been carried out to relieve drought in Northeastern provinces.

The Rain-making Center in Nakornrachasima (นครราชสีมา) carried out rainmaking operations in Buriram (บุรีรัมย์) for the first day yesterday, to solve drought problems and water shortages in the areas.

Agriculture officer of Buriram, Narongrit Onchoi (ณรงค์ฤทธิ์ อ่อนช้อย), revealed that the provincial administration and the provincial agriculture office had requested help from the Agriculture Ministry for rainmaking operations to relieve drought problems, adding that the centre in Nakhon Ratchasima sprayed chemicals for the operations yesterday. He said that Buriram has declared 19 districts in the province as disaster zones, as drought has hit more than 937,000 people. He said that around 230 rainmaking operations will be carried out so that the people and farmers will have enough water for consumption and agricultural activities.

Mr. Narongrit said that more than 100 rai of farmland have been affected by drought. Buriram province has prohibited farmers from growing rice at the moment, recommending that farmers plant short-lived plants that consume little amount of water.

As for water for consumption, he said that province has transported more than 1 million liter of water to distribute to the people.

100 rai? :D

This is the second time that TNNBPRD news bulletins have mentioned this figure... :o

If the drought is such a concern (which I do not necessarily disbelieve as I was in the area this time last year... and witnessed first hand the barren landscape) maybe it's an error in the translation. :D

Maybe missing a couple of decimal points or something?

Any locals able to verify/validate/refute/clarify the exact numbers?
