draftvader
to keeniau : why the ping succeed and not the trace route? i believed ping and trace route were linked more or less... Almost inevitably this will be an intermittent connection issue. There is quite a bit you can do to improve your connection reliability in Thailand. I'm sure there will be plenty of suggestions, but start with NOT using the ISPs DNS. google public dns or open dns are 2 good starting points. There are plenty of "paid for" dns solutions that provide even more reliability. Basically put, the quicker you can get your connections and reliance away from the ISP's technical "concepts" the better!
AyG
Oh, how timely: http://www.thaivisa.com/forum/topic/619541-tot-server-crash-wipes-out-thailands-internet/ Don't come to Thailand if you depend upon a fast or reliable Internet connection. Personally, my connection was out for a few hours around lunchtime. This is something that happens to me a couple of times or so a month so not a particular surprise. The "out time" is longer, however, if someone has stolen the copper telephone cables in your area, or a telegraph pole has been hit by a truck or by lightning - all of which have happened to me in the last couple of years.
draftvader
Oh, how timely: http://www.thaivisa....lands-internet/ Don't come to Thailand if you depend upon a fast or reliable Internet connection. There are outages from time to time in Thailand. I remember an outage that I had once that lasted 3 days. Somebody drove into the nearby junction box downing my connection...but that was in Twickenham, West London. Whilst I have been here I have had a few outages caused by heavy rain (why does that always catch Thailand by surprise?) and one where, like AYG has mentioned, a local telephone pole was hit by lightning and the end result was a small explosion right outside my bedroom window (which woke up my wife and I, but left our 1 year old daughter fast asleep!!). 3BB took 2 working days to repair that, but I think that is their contractual obligation. My biggest complaints about internet in Thailand are poorly run ISP provided DNS, invisible proxies, sharing my line with spammers and near useful customer service (this does depend on the ISP and where you are located). There is a thread about ISP customer service somewhere in this forum.

troudball
many thanks for all the reply my first conclusion is reliability and ping are really worse than europe but manageable... my next move will be to contact the isp by mail and ask them if they block ports, especially port 4000 , 4001 (for the trading software) and additionaly port 119 and 443 (nntp, https for binary download on usenet) so if you have info on it don't hesitate!!!
