Thousands pay last respects to Sanan

BANGKOK: -- The late veteran politician Sanan Kachornprasart was granted an octagonal urn with decorative items and a wreath by Their Majesties the King and Queen and the Royal Family, while thousands of people including many VIPs paid respects at his royally sponsored bathing rites yesterday.

Sanan, a six-time MP and Chart Thai Pattana Party chief adviser, succumbed to a severe blood infection at Bangkok's Siriraj Hospital at the age of 77 on Friday.

Privy Council president Prem Tinsulanonda, who brought the Royal bathing water to the funeral at 5pm at Chonlaprathan Rangsarit Temple in Nonthaburi, was welcome by Sanan's wife Chawiwan Kachornprasart, and his son, Deputy Agriculture Minister Siriwat Kachornprasart.

Many high-profile figures attended the rite, including Wat Paknam Pasicharoen Abbot Somdet Phra Maha Ratchamangkalajarn, Deputy Prime Minister and Finance Minister Kittiratt Na-Ranong, Democrat Party leader Abhisit Vejjajiva, Chart Thai Pattana Party adviser Somsak Prisananantakul and senior United Front for Democracy Against Dictatorship member Veerakarn Musikapong.

Some 1,000 Phichit residents early yesterday boarded 10 buses to travel to the temple to bid farewell to Sanan. Phichit's 12 districts put up billboards expressing condolences to Sanan's family and praising Sanan's works for Thailand and Phichit.

Sanan's funeral chanting ceremony would continue for 10 days - seven days of which would be royally-sponsored - before the body is placed for merit making and for the public to pay their respects at Sanan's Sanam Bin Nam residence in Nonthaburi for a total of 100 days. After this, a royally sponsored cremation will be held.

Premier Yingluck Shinawatra said she called Siriwat to offer condolences for the loss his father, who she said was a veteran politician who served the country. PM's Office minister Suranand Vejjajiva said Yingluck would attend the chanting ceremony tonight.

Democrat Songkhla MP Thavorn Senniem, meanwhile, vowed to continue Sanan's work, especially in the area of national reconciliation, by having wrongdoers punished before forgiveness can be granted, while ensuring all sides are satisfied.
