BANGKOK, Feb 19 - On March 23 for one hour -- 8.30pm-9.30pm, Bangkok will be plunged into darkness for the annual Earth Hour Campaign, part of the global effort to raise awareness about climate change. With the aim of reducing up to 2,000 megawatts of electricity use, joint efforts between the private and public sectors are keen on reducing unnecessary electrical usage.

Bunjong Sookdee, Director of Bangkok Metropolitan Administration (BMA) Department of Environment and Triraj Pukachsarnsilp, vice-president of FEED Thailand, held a soft-launch on Monday to promote the joint efforts of the private, public and media sectors in encouraging public participation in this year’s Earth Hour Campaign.

Campaigning under the theme of “I will if you will”, 2013 is the fifth consecutive year this environmentally-friendly campaign is being hosted in Thailand. With hopes of encouraging energy-saving behaviour as part of everyday life, organisers will conduct this year’s event mainly at the lobby (ground floor) of the CentralWorld shopping complex offices, March 23 from 8.30pm- 9.30pm.

In addition to this venue, organisers plan to coordinate with other important venues such as the Grand Palace, Wat Arun, Rama 8 Bridge, the Giant Swing, as well as events in the provinces as part of this global event.

Last year, the campaign saved up to 1,528 megawatts of electricity, and reduced carbon dioxide emissions by as much as up to 815 tonnes, worth a staggering 4.37 million baht. This year’s target is set at 2,000 megawatts, with special emphasis on incorporating energy-saving lessons in curricula of some BMA-affiliated schools.

With importance placed on teaching younger children to become more aware of the environment and climate change, the Office of the Basic Education Commission (OBEC) has plans to incorporate these issues into its future curriculum as well. (MCOT online news)

cute but a waste of time. oooh saved 4 million baht in carbon. Would be curious to know how much revenue was lost from businesses closing for an hour? Only way to get people to reduce energy use is to raise the price. period.

If the media sectors really want the public to take notice, they would suspend all TV and radio broadcasts for that hour. From 2030 to 2130 is soaps time, and their lack would be noticed.
