Hi,

I need to renew my UK passport. I'm a bit confused about the process.

I have seen the UK government information.

All passport applications etc are sent to HongKong now and then sent onto UK. The new passport is sent back from UK direct to Thailand as far as I can gather.

They say that the cost includes courier fee back to me.

However I see that some people have also paid a return service with DHL. Maybe that is old info, not sure. As the current information appears to show that the passport fee includes courier service return to Thailand. But where in Thailand? Does it include CR?

I keep reading about having to use DHL but I also read that things might not be so easy to send with DHL from Chiang Rai, especially if they are doing a delivery back to CR, which makes me worry a bit. Is it better to get it delivered to e.g. Chiang Mai where they have x2 DHL shops? Can DHL deliver to one of their digs and wait until I can come and get it (possibly weeks!).

So my main question is: are there any UK people here in CR who have renewed their passports recently? If so, what was your experience? Esp. regarding couriers etc.

Thank you!

John.

Here is some information from a (new?) webpage (which I can't post on here)

Dear John

I sent mine regualr post no problem

Do keep receipt and copy as it is technically supposed to be on you.

I have a C Rai driving licence which is always accepted by rd checks, however might be good to have copy of latest TM card ?

I will leave Lopburi and the exprts to confirm/contradict as I would not want to mis advise.

I did try return fee at our rural PO but after 3 visits witha Thai speaker no go .

It all worked out fine,I paid by card as I am not sure i would trust a cheque/money order in post in Hong kong

Pm if you wish to discuss it

On arrival i went with old and new on next 90 day trip to M Sai where they just updated visa etc into new one, albiet using several pages!

Good luck

John

Hi John.

Firstly , DO NOT SEND YOUR OLD PASSPORT with your application . What you do is make a copy of the photo page and that gets sent , not the passport , Thai immigration have outlawed the sending of passports to anywhere as they must remain on the person .

Once you have filled in the application form , make sure you have the correct sized photographs , it is very important that you do exactly what the application asks for.

When you have all the documents , put in an envelope , along with the visa payment details or BANKERS DRAFT CHEQUE , nothing else will be accepted , with the full payment for the passport renewal and the fee for the return shipping of the passport back to you . I believe they use DHL for the return shipment of the passport to you . All they need is the address of where the passport is to be sent .A self addressed envelope is to be sent with the application form so they can send the new passport back to the address you have stated on the envelope .

I then took my application to the post office and recorded delivery of it to the office in Hong Kong. I think the Thais call is EMS. About 2-3 weeks later I had my new passport delivered to my home , which I had to sign for .

Good luck , its not such a big deal to do if you follow what the application asks you to do .

I agree with sunholidysun,i sent mine EMS,you can follow it on the net,20 days later it arrived in a DHL package delivered by my local postman, and it was dated for the expirery of the old passport,I hate filling in forms,so added a few notes just in case,no problem, send a couple months early if you are worried.
