ICT SET TO BRING FORTH INTERNET SERVICE PROVIDER PROTECTION LAW

The Assistant to the Information and Communication Technology Minister, Mr. Kannawat Wassinsangworn (คณวัฒน์ วศินสังวร), is preparing to bring forth internet service provider protection laws, which will block obscene websites.

Mr. Kannawat stated that over the past year, the ministry was able to block the majority of more than 3000 foreign websites displaying improper content and materials. He stated that the ministry's goal was to counter as many of these web-sites as possible, and that this year's goal was similar to last year's.

The Assistant added that many internet service providers in Thailand have extended their cooperation in the government effort, but some have cited that there are no ISP protection laws, and that closing off web-sites may result in lawsuits.

The ICT Ministry will discuss this matter further and make a decision on what law to bring forth to counter this.

strange news title... I was presuming that the article would be about measures taken to protect ISP's from too much outside interference, eg. from the government. Instead it's the opposite.

Also, with the current 3,000 websites blocked, does that mean they have only 4,997,000 more websites to go?

More than five million websites to be Blocked

"Inappropriate material"

BANGKOK: -- The government will launch a crackdown on pornographic material, offensive cartoons and Internet websites that contain inappropriate material, the government spokesman said yesterday.

Surapong Suebwonglee said more than five million websites from around the world feature rape in their content, causing widespread alarm among relevant authorities

So they want to protect us from Pornographic Stuff(as part of it)? How? They would have to shut down P2P and all access to torrents, but that isn't really the issue i guess. Maybe they have some "sideincome" from the countless Traders that try to sell you " sexy movie" at the ........Plaza , and want to generate some more revenue.

I do understand they want to do something about improper Content on Websites, but is the way to go??

Such sites are certainly not "obscene" to me, I feel that if the minister feels, offended by them. Then he would do well to refrain from looking at them, and leave me as an adult to make my own choices. What an idiot! They will never be able to block all pornographic websites, it's like saying you want to stop people from drinking. Where do they get these people from? :o

maybe later they want to ban other content.....

they can stop Thai people, but they can't stop Austrians from drinking :-)

It is not the porno sites they want to hit; it is an excuse to block those sites that criticized the corrupt TRT politicians who mishandling the country affairs. This is what they are more afraid.

Which is a much more serious breach of internet users rights!!!!

Thailand gets more backward by the day.................... :o

Is it illegal to download an xxx movie from a web site and then view it on your pc while in Thailand?

This is a genuine question by the way, just not sure about the laws.

I would say yes, it would be illegal.

I read a story a couple of years ago (?) about a farang that got into an altercation with a BG. She agreed to let him take pics of them having sex for 3,000 baht. When they were finished, he only gave her 1,000.

She came back with her boyfriend, who beat up the farang. When the police investigated, they found he had other pics on his computer (pics of him having sex with other women). Apparently they charged him with having porno (or indecent material) on his computer.

The fact that prostitution is illegal as well obviously never crossed the minds when the BIB did their investigation.

T.I.T. :o

Just another fresh steamy load from ICT.

Not long ago they were saying they would close down all 6 million websites when what they meant was "block access". These spokespersons are surely experts at changing screensaver and background picture settings on their pc's but that's where it ends... :o

I'm sure that even before translation, "bring forth internet service provider protection laws, which will block obscene websites" still made no sense... :D

This website can be accessed again. http://www.corruptionwatch.net/

Why?

They've had to move their website out of the country after their previous hosting company received threats.

For how long?

Well, it all depends on what they really mean by "bring forth internet service provider protection laws, which will block obscene websites".

They could never hope to block them all anyways. I read a report on internet censorship in Saudia Arabia about 2 years ago.

They (Saudia Arabia) tried to block any and all sites they deemed offensive. The group that did the study tried accessing around 575 random sites (from computers in Saudia Arabia) and found just over 400 were blocked. Obviously that meant they could still view almost 175 sites.

According to the people doing the study, Saudia Arabia has some of the strictest (internet) censorship rules.

If Thailand were to try the same thing, it would most likely have a similar result. They'd get the more prominent sites, but many more would slip through. Just like spam email. No matter what you try and filter out, you still end up getting piles of it.

Here's an interesting article we had on here 3 years ago... more of the same , but funnier.

http://www.thaivisa.com/index.php?514&back...rce&tt_news=434

I like the part where they discussed each morning which websites will be blocked. :o

As I mentioned before, they have just about no idea what they're trying to fight. Better stick to learning what's in your control panel. :D

Always interesting that the least moral people try to use 'public moral' as an excuse to, via democratic elected MPs, step closer and closer once again to faschism.

We have seen it in several western states, most middle eastern and, ofcourse, more and more in SEA too.

you could make it reverse.

block everything and just alow the "good things"

A link not working, write an email and someone review it and put it in the allowed list.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but isn't that how the internet works in China?
