cyprean Posted March 4, 2013 Posted March 4, 2013 I was wondering if buying a 2.7 VVT-i Fortuner and converting it to run LPG as well is a good idea? 1) Can the LPG tank fitted in the spare tire holder? 2) Is the performance OK? I have driven the 3.0 D4D VN turbo and that has more than enough of power.
stevenl Posted March 4, 2013 Posted March 4, 2013 The performance of the petrol version is already insufficient, so with LPG it will get worse.
hansnl Posted March 4, 2013 Posted March 4, 2013 Fortuner 3.0 d 163 hp 343 Nm Fortuner 2.7 158 hp 241 Nm Well no, this indicates the diesel is a tad stronger in the torque business, in fact, quite a tad stronger. If you decide on the petrol version, a LPG-conversion will not make a mighty difference. That is, if the installation is installes and regulated as it should be. There are saddle tanks available. That said, many installation guys seem to be unwilling to install such a tank. It is slightly more work, but what's more, they have the normal tanks in stock. All-in-all, buy the diesel
aussiebebe Posted March 4, 2013 Posted March 4, 2013 Hongtong Autogas has lots of well-produced videos on youtube - there's one of a Fortuner they did that has the donut LPG tank in place of the spare wheel. I don't know how to link - so yes, it's possible. With the Mirage video they posted a dyno test but not on this Fortuner video. I don't know whether LPG is such a smart idea - installers only warranty the equipment not engine damage.
cyprean Posted March 4, 2013 Author Posted March 4, 2013 Great find. Here is more info on it: http://hongtonggas.co.th/fortuner.html Fortuner would be a perfect long travel car when equipped with LPG. 7 seats, comfortable rear suspension, great comfort, and very cheap to run with LPG.
cyprean Posted March 4, 2013 Author Posted March 4, 2013 The performance of the petrol version is already insufficient, so with LPG it will get worse. I would like to test drive the 2.7 VVT-i Auto fortuner. The diesel is very powerful, but with LPG it would be really cheap run it. Another option is Pajero Sport, thoughts on Pajeros benzin engine¨'s power?
cyprean Posted March 4, 2013 Author Posted March 4, 2013 140 hp and 219 nM torque with LPG. On the bench its going over 200 km/h and the acceleration seems OK.
cyprean Posted March 4, 2013 Author Posted March 4, 2013 100 km trip about 200 baht. So 2 baht per km. Not that economical as I thought. Many LPG converts run at 0.6-0.8 baht / km. Diesel is at 3 baht / km without conversion cost and more power so more value there.
cyprean Posted March 4, 2013 Author Posted March 4, 2013 What is the yearly tax on benzin Fortuners? For diesel double cab hilux it is about 5000 baht, so one might save this way if the benzin version tax is cheaper. I assume fortuner diesel tax is is inline with hilux tax.

monty Posted March 5, 2013 Posted March 5, 2013 Diesel engines are by nature more suited for heavy vehicles, so the petrol version will be quite thirsty to start with! The LPG conversion will add another 10-15% to that consumption so compared to the diesel savings will not be that massive. 15l/km on lpg (6.7 km/l) is very possible bringing km cost to 2 B/km. Simple, if you already have a petrol fortuner, conversion will save you heaps. If you still have to buy, go for the diesel... 1
VocalNeal Posted March 5, 2013 Posted March 5, 2013 What Monty said... If it was used maybe. Toyota stopped the 2.7 l in trucks and reserved the engine for Fortuners because too many people were buying the trucks for conversion to LPG! I know because one of my salesman wanted to but one. New Fortuner? Get a diesel unless the selling price for a petrol is that much cheaper.
