Cabinet approves compensations for victims of 1973 student uprising

BANGKOK: -- The cabinet has approved a budget of Bt77.42 million to assist victims of Thailand's student uprising in 1973.

The fund, proposed by the Ministry of Social Development and Human Security, will be used to compensate 90 victims of the kingdom's first popular uprising for democracy, 43 of them have died and the remaining 47 have become physically disabled or mentally disordered.

Those who have died will each receive Bt215,900, while those who have become physically disabled or mentally disordered will each receive Bt1.45 million.

The compensations equal to those of the 1992 popular uprising and is in accordance with the Ministry of Finance's regulations.

Thailand has experienced three bloodsheds from democratic movements so far--the first in October 1973, the second in October 1976 and the third in May 1992, all of which, mostly, involved students and middle-classed people.

The cabinet, at its weekly meeting here on Tuesday, also approved a Ministry of Education plan to install 250,000 computers and hi-speed Internet systems in schools throughout the kingdom, according to Deputy Government Spokesman Chalermchai Mahakitsiri.

Agencies concerned had been instructed to implement the computer and Internet procurement plan with transparency and in accordance with the Ministry of Education's regulations, he told a press conference after the cabinet meeting at the Government House.

And the cabinet also approved a budget of 2.151 billion baht for the forthcoming election... see this thread. :o

The scales of balance are slightly tilted IMHO. Only 90 victims? The history books seem to be a little distorted. :D
