Mostly to see the natural beauty of the area, and contribute my few baht to the local post-tsunami economy, I'd like to visit Phi Phi over Songkran, April 13-14.

On a Thai teacher's budget, so looking for low-cost bungalow w/ fan. Any suggestions or ideas? It's hard to get up-to-date info. via other web sites except for the higher-end resorts. Appreciate any help or tips you can give.

This outstanding little secluded spot is a great hideaway from the rest of the island and has a collection of 18 well designed basic bungalows. The friendly owner is very approachable. Some of the bungalows have particularly good views over the beach and out to sea and while they are pretty no-frills offerings, they are comfortable and all have reasonably sized balconies. The snorkelling here is simply outstanding. There is also a small restaurant on site. We suggest you call them before arriving on Ko Phi Phi to check bungalow availability. Recommended.

This is a great place to stay. All the goods things everyone has said we completely second. Just be aware that a reservation doesn't necessarily mean you have a spot reserved. True to southern Thai style this means first come first served. If someone decides that they don't want to leave when they said they would the owners will not kick them out because it wouldn't be nice. This can lead to a lot of confusion or frustration for those with a western mind-set. We were initially unable to get a bungalow when we showed up at Ton Sai Bay and had to stay the night in the crazy party zone. Once we got out to the resort we had to make due with a bungalow more expensive than we planned on. This was happening quite a bit to people while we were there. Basically all the hype they are receiving on Travelfish is making them more busy than they can handle so be patient and make sure that you have a backup plan if you can't get what you want. They owners, though, are soooo incredibly nice! In the long run it is worth trying to stay here.

My husband and I stayed here for four days in Jan 2006. The food was amazing and was a great value. The bungalows were very basic, but it was all you need for a nice get away. In 2006 they will be opening newer (nicer) bungalows here. Ask for them when you book. If you let them know what ferry you will arrive on someone will meet you at the peir and arrange transport to the bunglalows for you. Bring sun block and bug spray! Have fun!!

Certainly the friendliest spot on the beach, this place has a range of basic huts available on a decent stretch of the beach. Rates vary depending on position. The huts are basic, but it's a good budget option. Rantee Beach P.P. Island was undamaged by the tsunami.

I travelled for 11 months from the UK to Australia, and had the best week of my life on this beach. The people are the friendliest ever, the beach is so cosy, the beach huts are very good and the snorkelling is second to none. Go here, have a romantic time, get on with the people, and treasure the memory for life.

Bambina: Since I posted my original inquiry, I've also continued looking for accommodations on the internet, without much success.

But you've got the touch--wonderful information! I will follow up several of your suggestions and information right away.

Thanks very much!
