I live in a Village with guards from a company owned by an influential Thai man.

We have had issues with them for about 2 years & after many meetings, nothing has changed.

I know, change companies.

That is easier said than done, every company contacted says they don't have staff available to service our needs.

In other words, they know who is currently the guard company & they are too scared to cross them by taking their village.

The guards seem to think their job is to push the button & open the gate, we can't convince their job is to NOT push the button & open the gate.

Ask for ID, direct them to the property they are seeking & record the vehicles details, not very hard really.

Has anyone had an experience with privately employed guards in a village rather than guards through a company.

I know of 1 village that has been able to achieve the impossible, get good private guards, how about anyone else?

Rocking horse excrement springs to mind. I have yet to find security in a village in Thailand that isn't a joke. They may well stop Thais but any westerner always seems to be waved through.

The security guards in my village are equally as useless as the OP describes, as are the management company. Nothing is done. You get pathetic lip service, and that's about it. My Thai wife has warned me not to push matters too far, or there may well be adverse repercussions from security. Street dogs are allowed in, and surrounding the entrance gates are a whole host of these street dogs, scavenging. Complete farce.

Agree with that 100%, especially the nightshift - they come to work to sleep, <deleted> is all that about?

Waste of time!

Similar situations everywhere in Thailand and even at the most expensive buildings or villages. I should be a robber :-)

You haven't mentioned anything about break-ins in your village. Is there a problem with crime in the village ? What about vandalism ?

I'm just wondering what the criminal activity in your village is, to make you have to take such drastic action.

There have been some breakins but no vandalism every. I suspect the guards were involved in at least 2 of those breakins but of course have no proof.

It is a measure to gain some control over the situation, take charge & have the guards answerable to the village, not some guy with too much money to care about the village. There can be bonuses & penalties depending on the level of safety provided, it works both ways.

The 1 village I mentioned has had the same guards for 2 years & never had a breakin in that time. They get well looked after with a good wage, bonus if they stay the year, organise their own rosters & the village ladies even supply food if they have over cooked.

The guards we have now are young khmer boys that would be in their teens. They have no English, a little Thai & are on the lesser side of useless.

It appears that most villages are guarded by the same standard of guards. They are great at saluting as you pass, that is the limit of their expertise. If I want a valet to open the gate, I will employ one at about 1/3 the cost of these village idiots.

It's good your company is owned by an important person.

You want the guards to fear the boss.

These companies do have some decent staff but they are usually shifted around to new or important clients.

You are so correct about staff movement, we had a guard that actually spoke English, moved on very quickly despite the fact we demand an English speaker on each shift..............TIT

Security guard = man with whistle who lets every man and his dog in; often napping, getting drunk or staring into space. Extent of training: how to salute. Zero ability to differentiate housewife from burglar.

The above was in the thread: Official Pattaya Phrase Book,

Very appropriate & sadly, very true.

Our village had problems with the security many years ago. They were responsible for the breakins as they knew who was home and who wasn't. They were changed and it got better. But we had problems with the night guards sleeping. Even in the guard shack! So we changed a bit over a year ago and went with a group that uses men from the navy in Sattahip. 2 during the day and 3 at night. Yes, we still get a sleeping guard now and then...I think that's a problem you'll always have...but they are pretty darn good.

We had an issue a while back. A Thai scooter gang came to harass a resident. Once the navy guys told them who they were, they backed off. Guess that carries some weight here? Seemed to in our case.

No stray dogs are let in and no vendors unless they can specifically say who they are visiting. They must leave their ID at the gate. Same goes with farangs. If you know the name of the person and the house number, you'll probably get in. But not always. And sometimes you will have to leave an ID. No vendors going from door to door trying to sell stuff.

Phil Connors has had great luck with his security by hiring them directly. His village is quite happy. I've got a friend in another village and nobody can get in unless your name is left at the gate, or the owners call the gate and tell them it's OK for you to enter.

Our village doesn't have security, but a number of large dogs let outside several times per day to relieve themselves, Rottweilers and Pits. They keep stray dogs away. Vendors usually back off when they enter the street, and see one or several dogs are out. I've been living here for about a year, and not aware of any burglary for this time. Lived before in a rather large condominium with several buildings and navy security from a company in Sattahip all over the place, and there were burglaries all the time. Once in my own room a couple of years ago. Seems crime is reduced if there is no security.

Wow that would suck...I get most of my best food and household supplies (brooms and such) from the friendly vendors. Wouldn't want to live my life in such paranoid fear of others!

Is a "scooter gang" like a junior league motorcycle gang?

Sometimes it depends on how they are treated by the residents. Our security guards I used to buy them smokes, cold pop and even had them over for dinner sometimes and believe me we never had problems except for fake cops trying to harass me because of my ex calling them. They threatened to kill my dogs with their guns through my gate and demanded I let them in. I cut one of their fingers off with a machete and called the cops and the Pattaya People and they showed up together and arrested them. Tons of blood for me to clean up though.

Strange post from someone who was trying to rent his single room in a shoddy block on the east side?

Strange? Shoddy block? So Siam Country Club is a shoddy block? Yes I was trying to rent my room to help people however I paid a years rent while I went away to work. Cost me all of $900.00 CAD. Are you jelous or something? You think I have lived in this room for 13 years?

BTW are you stalking me or something that you remember a kind post that I made last year? You don't even know me. I'm a nice guy. As a matter of fact I just bought a motorcycle and donated it to the Father Ray Foundation so why would you say something bad about me? You are strange indeed.

I think he doth protest too much. Still didn't answer my original question.

I stalk no one but occasionally my BS sensors kick in and I remember a poster.

You cut one of their fingers off with a machete, and they had guns and never shot you - lucky boy.

That's awesome you cut their finger off - funny as <deleted>!!

Our condo has a contract with a well known security firm. We know the guards salaries but the security firm charges the condo almost double the salary. Is that normal. Realise the firm has to make a profit for admin expenses etc but double the salary seems like profiteering.

Thanks for the info, if you have any phone numbers or contact details, can you pm them to me please.

I will contact Phil Connors & ask for some advice as well.

Thanks again

My friend lives in a village where they just cancelled their security due to a variety of reasons. Poor management committee is the #1 reason. They now have trucks coming in late at night, cutting locks off gates, and clearing out the houses. Been happening on a regular basis. Plenty of dogs running around also. This is a very big village.

Not living in fear. We live a bit out of town, so few vendors are around here anyway. It's just our policy and the residents here like it that way. To each his own.

Not sure about the scooter gang thing. I think because most Thais own scooters, not bigger bikes, they are just called scooter gangs. Plenty around, unfortunately.
