Pimay1
Sek Wannamethee, the Foreign Ministry's director-general of the America and Pacific Department, said on Thursday the university had informed the ministry of the award which recognises her prominent role in the international arena and for being the first woman to be voted premier of Thailand. So it had nothing to do with her role in making the world a safer and better place, stamping out corruption in their home country, insuring women are treated on an equal basis as men, improving the lives of every citizen by bringing them out of poverty, and establishing a true democracy. I shoud have known.

Robert Mugabe Muammar Gaddafi First Lady Suzanne Thabet, wife of ousted president Hosni Mubarak Mugabe had more than a dozen Honorary Degrees - none of them from New Zealand though - you must be referring to UK and USA universities?. the major ones were bestowed on him by the University of Edinburgh, the University of Massachusetts, Michigan State University . . . and so on In 1994 the UK's Queen Elizabeth appointed him an honorary Knight Grand Cross in the Order of the Bath. Gaddafi - imagine he awarded them to himself, just like all those medals! You could add Hillary Clinton to that list of international criminals - she has eight Honorary Degrees.

Gadaffi wasn't that bad actually. at least not bad as the other international criminals from your list.
cycloneJ
Honorary degrees - maybe we could all have one - just need a printer and a hat! AUT had awarded 13 in the 10 years pre Dec 2012; maybe YS was #14. University of Masachussets has awarded over 2000 since 1885 . Where's mine? Fomer Kenyan President Julius Nyerere had 23, incl 13 doctorates. Not something I'm overly familiar with, but a little Googling and think i have a winner in terms of NZers being awarded them - Dame Kiri with at least 13! Singing in a high voice for world peace? Soprano Dame Kiri Te Kanawa is a serial collector with honorary degrees from the Auckland, Victoria and Waikato universities as well as several from overseas institutions including Oxford, Cambridge, Nottingham, Chicago, Bath, Dundee, Durham, Nottingham, Sunderland and Warwick.
