tomx2
Hi. I just arrived in Thailand(Pattaya) a couple of days ago. This is the first time I brought my laptop with me and everything is working well. I get free wifi from the hotel, but can only be accessed in the lobby. I was the OP in a previous post listing my packaging procedure for my laptop peripherals. As previously stated I will be staying for 8 months. Thanks for those who responded. Yesterday I checked the list of wifi available (8 hotels/business around my hotel), one called ICT free wifi by True”. I also saw this network available in my room. It requires a registration, login, password, email, mobile, and passport no. I did the registration and entered a fake mobile and passport number. I was given 3 months free access and I could renew more time before it expires in 3 months. So now, I can access the net via wifi using True in my room instead of going to the lobby. Why I decided to register for True.Mainly to access the net in my room. It gets very noisy and is extremely hot surfing the net in the lobby. My concern: Is this service given by True actually free. I guess I come from world of nothing is free asstated in print. Yes, I did give a fake name, passport no, and mobile, but did give my correct email. Has anyone used this service? Can they track my use via laptop Ip address and bill me after 3 months? Would someone explain why True will have wifi free to the public w/o any compensation? What is the benefit on their side. Advertising? I will cease logging in this network until I hear from thaivisa members. Thanks. TC.
ongchart
Yes its free. Its part of the free wifi network supported by the government. You are lucky to be able to register as there is a quota for each cell. Enjoy it while you can. You won't be charged.
wpcoe
Don't the free government-sponsored WiFi networks come with a fairly limited download quota? I thought I had bookmarked some articles which indicated that, but now can't find them.
tomx2
Thanks for the replies. Here's an update. Logon after receiving the above responses. About 30 minutes into True Wifi, signal dropped off. Login again, message stated, I have exceeded the daily limit login tomorrow.. So yes it's free with only 30 minutes of use per day. TC.
