Hi guys. I am planning to move to northern thailand at the beginning of april 2014 (ideally Chiang Mai) on a triple entry tourist visa. I was just wondering if anybody could give me the lowdown on places to live and not to live in Chiang Mai and surounding areas. I havent been to Thailand for about 4 years so thing's would of changed a bit since my last vist. Any tips would be grateful. I know this sounds a bit premature but ive worked my socks off for a long time to be able to do this and would like to plan the best i can

Thanks

Hi rent a room somewhere, rent a bike or car and take your time looking around getting the lay of the land and an understanding of the weather seasons and how they affect you (e.g. air pollution in Feb-Apr) and the places you find appealing (e.g. flooding in Sep) before making any long term commitment.

Good advice.

The main things to watch out for will be flooding and noisy bars right next door to where you live. the smog is unavoidable. Unless we get an early rainy season such as we had two years ago.

not all people are american

it hasnt changed that much in 4 years

you knew how your lifestyle was and is then.

its a very open question so everyone will give replies depending on their lifestyle and expectations etc

on the triple visa you will have to be near an immigration office every 60 days to get the one month extension

if you want to maximise the visa that is

so in north thailand you can go to CM or Mae sai to do that

like i said all depends on your lifestyle to how people can answer your question

You're not really moving to Thailand if you're on a tourist visa.

Sorry to sound so harsh, but using tourist visas isn't a good long-term plan if you really want to stay here for most of the year.

As for finding a place to live -- you've gotten good advice. Stay someplace like a guest house or serviced apartment for a month and look around. You may not be able to open a bank account or sign a long-term lease with a tourist visa, though.

Remember you can't just duck into a neighboring country to get another triple-entry tourist visa and the Thai embassies in the region take a dim view of someone staying in Thailand forever with back-to-back tourist visas.

I would stay away from the following (for my room):

The beer bars

The river (in case it floods again - would not stay too close to it)

The airport (under the flight path)

Any intersection in the city. Too many honks and too much brake dust.

I know oregon thai consulate still has a triple entry visa on their web site each 60 days that is what I did last time.

So it might still be available.

When you get closer I think you will get more accurate estimates that you are looking for..

Just do it.

What it boils down to is finding a place to stay and a motorbike.
