Need To Go To Hospital For Sinus/eye Problem. What To Do?

I am bit helpless here and have been in no little pain.

I have had a nasal deviated septum/sinus condition which I have held at bay sometimes successfully. But lately the condition has worsened markedly. Basically, I have an intense pain above and in the corner of the left eye and although it sounds trivial, the pain is of such intensity and duration that I vomit repeatably over the course of the few hours it is at its worst.

Sorry failed posting, really in pain. Basically, what do I do at the hospital. Waht exploratory work i s reasonable to rule out glaucoma, tumours, and the more serious facial, cranial stuff. Know I have deviated septum already and this is where the problem radiates from to the frontal sinus above eye.

What surgery is generally available, that sort of thing?

Go and find out from a real eye doctor. They are cheap enough for a visit that you could ask two or three. You may get a narrower range of solutions than the TV doctors will give you but they are more likely to be right.

Agreed, go find a good eye doctor at a decent hospital, where are you located and I'll try and find you some options? It's too early to talk about surgery at this stage as there may be a fairly simple solution/answer to your problem, the fact that the pain is as intense as you say it is and that you are vomiting sounds to me like you need get your butt in gear and find a doctor/hospital now.

Any eye problem associated with this much pain will be associated with some visual disturbance.

Likely to be a frontal sinus blockage so a visit to an ENT is more likely to be of benefit. Sinus X-rays may show a thickening of the lining in case of a chronic problem. The pain is as a result of negative pressure in the sinus that happens when the drainage is blocked; the air in the sinus gets absorbed by the mucosal lining and this creates the negative pressure which results in this much pain.

Try a decongestant and perhaps a saline nasal rinse as well in the meantime.

By all means, get to a doctor. But don't be too surprised if the solution is simple, like some sinus irrigation with salt water.

Or, your symptoms of horrible pain above one eye, complete with vomiting, matches the migraines I got for decades. For years, we looked for sinus issues and described them as "sinus headaches", but finally go around to calling them migraines.

Caffeine is the best treatment I found for migraines, but I know there are a lot of newer, zoomier treatments available.

Hoping the best for you and that you don't need anything drastic or invasive.

BTW, I had my deviated septum straightened and my turbinates trimmed back and that helped reduce sinus drainage, but did not stop the migraines.

Thanks, this answer completely resonates with what I feel inside and with what the doctors say.

Over Songkran I'd been out and about without any issues, I forgot to go back inside when the cars came back to Bangkok. That day I was down Pratunam for hours, and I think I was dehydrated too and 'feeling migrainy'. There isn't an infection, and as soon as my sinuses clear the pain starts to subside and the headache and nausea too. The next day I also had the same on the other side but thankfully less intense.

But I wonder what I should do to rule out a tumour or polyp, is an xray good enough? I don't to undergo a lot of scans unless necessary.

Thanks also to CM, and ericg for your support and advice.

Thank you for this very insightful posting.

Yes that is my fear about having nasal surgery, it won't necessarily do a jot to solve the sinus issue, it's not a given at all. My mother suffers from the same frontal sinus issue and she never broke her nose as I did.

And yes migraine (stress headache) has been suggested in the past, particularly with regard to me overdoing it, it being quite a few things that upon reflection are just not possible really like sitting at a computer screen for hours in a 33 degree room, gulping cupfuls of hot tea, in a polluted city when you have non allergic rhinitis, not clever I can see that.

An x-ray will show if there is fluid in the sinus and if it is blocked, probably a good and inexpensive place to start, failing that the next step will almost certainly be a frontal lobotomy. biggrin.png

Just head to a qualified Dr. tomorrow. You need a professional assessment of your issues. I like the Dr. I recommended and also feel that Bumrungrad has some of he best diagnostic equipment available in Thailand.

Lobotomy? Wot annuver one!

Does look like migraine/bad headache though, which is a relief, I suppose.

Really don't fancy that again!
