B1 / ESOL ENTRY LEVEL 3 FOR SETTLEMENT

19 April 2013

This week, Trinity College London announced that their Graded Examination in Spoken English (GESE) Grade 5 in Speaking and Listening skills is suitable for Settlement (or ILR) and Naturalisation applications made on or after 28th October 2013.

Trinity's GESE grade 5 is set at B1 level on the CEFR and at ESOL Entry level 3 on the NQF and has been regulated by the Office of Qualifications and Examinations Regulation (Ofqual).

On 8th April, the Home Office announced its Knowledge of Language and Life in the UK for settlement and naturalisation Statement of Intent, changes to the requirement from 28th October 2013, which stated that "ESOL qualifications at entry level 3 or level 1 or level 2, including speaking and listening, that have been regulated by the Office of Qualifications and Examinations Regulation (Ofqual)", would be acceptable for use in settlement and naturalisation applications when taken together with the Life in the UK test. The qualification must be listed as an ESOL qualification on the Ofqual Register of Regulated Qualifications and must have been taken in England, Wales or Northern Ireland. Trinity's GESE grade 5 when taken with English Exam Centres in England meets this requirement.

English Exam Centres holds this exam three times a week across all three of England's major cities: London, Birmingham and Manchester. Check here to see where you can take the exam this week.
