Transport Min: Thailand's logistics system will be ready before AEC formation

BANGKOK, 23 April 2013 (NNT) – The Transport Ministry has affirmed that Thailand’s logistics system will be ready before the realization of the ASEAN Economic Community (AEC), adding that the country is now 70 percent ready in terms of its transportation system.

Speaking at a seminar on the readiness of Thailand’s logistics system for the AEC, Transport Deputy Minister General Prin Suwanatat expressed his confidence that the country’s logistics will be ready for the advent of the AEC , especially in the transport sector, which is now 70 percent ready.

He also expressed his belief that Thailand’s transportation system is as good as Malaysia's and Singapore's, its neighboring countries. However, when taking trucking business into consideration, Thailand is ahead of its competitors, as it has nearly 20,000 trucking companies providing services even though many of them are sorely in need of quality and standard improvement.

The deputy minister went on to say that before the AEC is finally introduced, the Transport Ministry will strictly enforce delivery-related regulations forcing all entrepreneurs to keep up with the standards, saying the move will enable them to compete with their counterparts in the region.

So he isn't counting the much talked about high speed rail or twin tracking the present rail system as part of "Thailand's logistics system".

I thought it had been stated that both those would take a lot of pressure of trucks and the roads.

I suspect however he forgot about the state of the roads after the daily beating by the trucks though they are nowhere as overloaded as they used to be even 10 years ago.

If the country is 70% ready in terms of it's transportation system, does this mean the 2.2 trillion Baht is to cover the remaining 30%?

Anyway I'm sure the Transport Mnistry using some CAM on tabletPcs to do the modeling for the Logistics System :-)

20,000 trucking firms. It is so wonderous to see all these trucks delivering sugar or eucalyptus to the factories, literally putting up their own village infront of the factory complete with launderies, restaurants and the such since it can take up to 2 weeks for a truck at the back of the queue to get to the point to deliver.

Logistics at its finest. Of course to run a train line with cars to deliver would cause a massive drop in the trucking business that this generates. And one wonders why Thailand has a truly decrpit commercial rail system.

Ready for what? Once the AEC does kick in and those wonderfully modern trucks from Singapore, Malaysia and Indonesia start rolling across the border Mr. Serpico and friends and their antiquated cattle trucks will be cast aside with barely a glance. But I shouldn't worry, Mr T will instruct his pretty sis to buy every household in Isaan a new one to carry their now over-priced rice.

There is nothing that says there will be more trucks at some future date crossing the border than there are today.....

Can someone please ask all the news reporters to actually understand what the AEC means .... so they can ask a meaningful question to these government guys that make these announcements.

Constantly overloaded, old trucks with wooden bodies and even older Isuzu and Toyota with open cabs. The we have the rail system which carries passengers to Chiang Mai breaking down. A port where 'efficiency' is a dirty word and container terminals as a regular source of scammed money with the most corrupt of all departments - Customs. Yes Minister, all will be or is ready for AEC, the more money and the more lies propaganda media reports as to progress, the better.
