Having said all that, it's true that Liverpool have produced some dreadful performances this season. Perhaps Liverpool do need to bring in a new man. But not to replace Benìtez, rather to assist him. The disjointed displays at home to the likes of Marseille, Wigan and Birmingham and away to Beşiktaş and Boro, along with recent rumblings of discontent from Liverpool's dressing room, indicate that the club is missing Pako Ayesteran more than Benìtez would have hoped. Benitez's former No2, who left Anfield last August, was the players' friend, the cuddly man-manager who helped ensure the team and Benìtez, whose personality is more remote, were on the same wavelength. Benìtez hasn't replaced Ayesteran - and allegedly vetoed a proposal to install Paul Jewell in that role before Jewell went to Derby County.

Perhaps after a perceived betrayal by his long-time partner he's finding it difficult to trust another man? He needs to get over that and commit to a new relationship. Or maybe tonight's result over the run-away leaders of Serie A will foster new togetherness and cohesion between team and manager. And fans and owners.

The point on Pako is the one that needs sorting out the most. I was quite suprised to hear that Paul Jewell had been rumored to be the new number 2 but not suprised that Rafa shot it down.

no point in having a red as a number 2. didnt work for ged and it wouldnt work for rafa. theres staff in abundance anfield. if rafa is left alone it will come with time domestically.

without champions league football going on its hard to have confidence in rafa. but as soon as its starts up again and we consistently beat the best teams in europe it all becomes a little clearer.

Liverpool richly deserved their 100th European win at Anfield in a game which they dominated. It required a touch of fortune off Inter full-back Maicon to deflect home Dirk Kuyt's shot for the opener before Gerrard delivered his customary Champions League cracker with a low 20-yard drive in the final minute. The goal was the skipper's 50th of his career at Anfield as he became the first Liverpool player to score in five successive European games in one season.

Mascherano was sensational and Liverpool have to keep hold of him.

KUYT: BAD PATCH IS BEHIND ME

Dirk Kuyt believes his Kop end strike against Inter will put a full stop on what he describes as a 'difficult period' in front of goal. java script:;

The winter months saw the goals dry up for Kuyt, who was also omitted from the latest Dutch squad by Marco van Basten.

But, following a goal against Barnsley and the opener on another heart-stopping night at Anfield, the frontman is confident the good times are about to roll.

He told Liverpoolfc.tv: "It was a great moment because everyone knows how important it is to score a goal like that. I think I have a difficult period behind me and I just want to look forward now.

Two late goals from Kuyt and Steven Gerrard mean the Reds travel to Italy with a commanding lead in three weeks' time.

But despite dominating throughout, and having a one-man advantage following the first-half dismissal of Marco Materazzi, Kuyt and co had to wait 85 minutes to make a breakthrough.

The Dutchman added: "Italians are really good in defence and they did really well even with 10 men, but we stayed patient and together and in the end got two goals.

"It was funny because I said to Stevie that maybe we have to keep hold of the ball and keep the clean sheet but he said we want to get another goal and he was right. He got a great goal and 2-0 is a great result, though we have one game to go in Milan, so it will be a tough night again."

Though the victory will go some way to easing last weekend's FA Cup disappointment, no one at Melwood is likely to lose perspective on the season as it stands.

Kuyt, for one, is at a loss as to how he and his teammates can go from defeat against Barnsley to making one of the best sides in Europe look ordinary.

"I think that's the magic of football," he said. "You lose three days ago against Barnsley, where everybody is expecting you to beat them easily, and then tonight you see a whole different team but with a lot of the same players.

"We didn't play well in the last few matches but we know how we have to play in the big games, especially in the Champions League. All the players worked really hard as a team and we had confidence in ourselves because we know we have a lot of quality. I think we showed that tonight."

The only time Liverpool have ever lost a two-goal first-leg lead in Europe was, coincidentally, against Inter in the 1964-65 European Cup semi-final.

When told of that famous night 43 years ago, Kuyt insisted it wasn't something he'd dwell on.

"We just want to keep looking forward and not too much in the past," said the forward.

Jamie Carragher claims Steven Gerrard is 'made for the Champions League' after the skipper's heroics against Inter Milan. The long list of Gerrard's great European moments got a little bit longer on Tuesday night when his late drive ensured Liverpool will take a 2-0 lead to the San Siro in three weeks' time.

TERRIFIC TORRES BURIES BORO

Liverpool have gone fourth in the Premier League after a superb hat-trick from Fernando Torres gave them a 3-2 victory over Middlesbrough at Anfield on Saturday.

The Reds had trailed to a ninth minute Boro goal for Tuncay Sanli, but Torres turned it around with two goals before the break, and he completed his second Liverpool hat-trick with a third midway through the second half. And although Downing made it 3-2 late on, the Reds held on for the points.

Torres has now scored 21 goals, a wonderful achievement in his first season in English football, and today's treble leaves him hot on the heels of Adebayor and Ronaldo in the race to be the Premier League's top marksman.

Rafa Benitez made just one change from the side that beat Inter Milan here on Tuesday, and that was forced upon him by the suspension of Jamie Carragher after he picked a fifth yellow card against Barnsley. Carragher's place was taken by Alvaro Arbeloa, who started for the first time since the 2-2 draw with Aston Villa in January.

Liverpool knew a win today would take them above Everton into fourth place, at least until their trip to Manchester City on Monday, and they set about their task in positive fashion when a 4th minute Gerrard corner caused confusion in the Boro box and then a shot from the same man flew wide of Schwarzer's left hand post.

But Middlesbrough came to Anfield with no shortage of confidence after an eight game unbeaten run and they rocked the Reds on nine minutes when Tuncay Sanli gave them the lead.

It came after a handball from Babel gave the visitors a free kick deep inside Liverpool territory, and Tuncay found himself all alone six yards out to head home Downing's in-swinging cross. The Reds rearguard had all pushed out looking to play Boro offside, but there was no flag and Tuncay celebrated as they protested.

They say goals change games and Tuncay's strike had certainly changed the picture. The Reds were reeling from their knock back and passes were going astray as Middlesbrough continued to look dangerous on the counter.

Rafa's men needed a lift and they got one from an unexpected source in the 28th minute. There looked nothing on as the ball bounced in front of the Boro back four, but Julio Arca lost his bearings and headed the ball over his defensive line, where Fernando Torres was waiting, and he equalised after speeding clear and rounding Schwarzer.

Parity was restored, but it didn't last long. The Reds' fans will hardly have had time to sit back down from celebrating El Nino's first strike when he scored again to give Liverpool the lead, and it was some goal. Torres has already treated us to some special moments in his first season here and this was another goal to saviour, the Spaniard beating Schwarzer with a superb shot from 25 yards.

The game had been turned on its head, but Middlesbrough were still a threat and they thought they'd equalised when another Downing cross was turned home by Tuncay, but the referee had spotted he'd done so with his arm and gave the Reds a free kick.

Liverpool began the second half in front, but the pattern of play suggested they'd have their work cut out to end it that way. Middlesbrough were making life difficult for them, and Downing in particular looked like he could ruin their day. Rafa has often lamented about his side's failure to kill off their opponents and it was clear that they'd need another goal here.

The game was on knife edge, but Torres settled everyone's nerves when he completed his hat-trick and made the game safe in the 61st minute. Torres has looked razor sharp since he returned from injury against Inter on Tuesday and he cut Boro down for a third time when he beat Wheater to the ball before placing it past Schwarzer and into the Kop net.

A nervous finish should have been avoided, but an 83rd minute goal from Downing again reduced the deficit one goal and it looked like finger nails would again be needed.

The 85th minute sending off of Boro forward Jeremie Aliadiere for raising his hands to Mascherano helped settle some nerves, and the Reds closed the game out to record a priceless three points in the race for a Champions League place.

RAFA: THE KEY WAS TO WIN

Liverpool boss Rafa Benitez was delighted after a Fernando Torres hat-trick paved the way for his side's 3-2 victory over Middlesbrough at Anfield on Saturday. The result takes the Reds above their city rivals Everton and into fourth place and Rafa was particularly pleased with the performance given that it came just days after their titanic tussle with Inter Milan.

"I was really happy with the performance," said Rafa. "I think coming after a Champions League game the most important thing was to win.

"After we scored the third goal on the counter attack you could see that we could score more, but they put us under a bit of pressure because they have some good players in attack. The key for us was to win and we won."

Liverpool's victory was made possible by Fernando Torres' second hat-trick for the club and El Nino has now scored a magnificent 21 goals this term. Rafa had some special praise for his hotshot compatriot and gave an insight into why he brought him to the club.

"It's not easy for a foreign player in his first year, but he has done really well," declared Benitez. " In the summer we were looking at a number of options, but we chose Torres because he is young and hungry and we thought his game would suit the Premier League.

"It's always difficult to score more than 20 goals, but he has done it in his first season. We knew that he was a player with power and pace, he can kill defenders with his pace.

"I didn't have a target in mind for him, the main thing for a striker is to score goals, but they also need to give assists and create space for the other players. Torres' work rate is good and everything is positive now for him and for the club."

TORRES HEADING FOR GREATEST DEBUT SEASON

Fernando Torres is on course to have the most prolific debut season of any striker in Liverpool's modern history. The Spanish hitman has so far notched up 21 goals in 31 games – or one every 1.48 matches.

That's more than John Aldridge (a goal every 1.55 games), Ian Rush (1.63), Roger Hunt (1.65), Robbie Fowler (1.83), Michael Owen (1.91) and Kenny Dalglish (2) managed in their first full seasons.

Torres' tally has included two hat-tricks, three in Europe and 15 in the league.

But, before the 23-year-old gets too carried away, Liverpoolfc.tv has discovered he hasn't yet got the best goals per minute ratio in the Premier League.

FERNANDO: WINNING TITLES IS MY MAIN GOAL

Hat-trick hero Fernando Torres today admitted he would gladly swap goals for silverware at Anfield. The Spanish striker took his tally for the season so far to 21 with his second treble of the campaign on Saturday as Rafael Benitez's men secured three points with a 3-2 victory over Middlesbrough.

While admitting he's delighted with his form in front of goal this term, Torres insists he will only be happy if the club are celebrating a trophy triumph at the end of the season.

"Maybe people will look at it as successful season for me, but I'll only consider the season a success if we win something," he said. "I'm 23 and I've never won a medal.

"The only time was when I was an under-16 and U19 player and that's a long time ago. I've come here to win titles and whether that's this season, next season, I don't know when, but that's my target.

"I hope I'm here for a long time, I want to stay here for a long time. I have six years on my contract and if everything is okay maybe it will be more.

"I'd prefer to be remembered as someone who helped Liverpool to win trophies than a great goalscorer. I'm here to win titles. The Champions League is a very important target for me. I've got to score goals because it's my job but it's not the most important thing for me."

Torres' hat-trick against Middlesbrough took his Premier League tally for the season to 15 - leaving him well on course to become the first Liverpool striker to reach 20 goals in a Premier League campaign since Robbie Fowler in 1995-96.

"It's the second hat-trick of my Liverpool career so it was a very happy day for me," he added.

"It was fantastic to score a hat-trick in front of the Kop. It was my first at Anfield and I feel very comfortable playing here.

"When I played in Madrid, I watched Premier League games a lot and knew it would be difficult to play here and that the defenders are very strong so I would have to say it's a surprise to have scored this many goals so quickly.

"Twenty-one goals is my best season yet and we still have a maximum of 18 games to go, in the Premier League and Champions League, so hopefully I can score more. I'm happy when the team wins, I'm not thinking about scoring 30.

"I didn't set myself a target at the start of the season. Obviously, I want to score as many goals as I can, it's my job, but whether it's 20, 25, I've no target. I just want to score as many goals as I can to make sure Liverpool are a success. It's not about me, it's about the team."

Tom Hicks's son forced to leave Sandon pub

THE son of Liverpool FC co-owner Tom Hicks had to be escorted out of a city pub by bodyguards after he was confronted by angry questions from fans.

Tom Hicks Jnr made an unannounced visit to The Sandon pub straight from the directors’ box at Anfield, where he watched Liverpool’s 3-2 victory against Middlesbrough on Saturday.

However, he was soon surrounded by supporters and was advised to withdraw by his bodyguards when the exchanges became increasingly heated.

According to one witness, Hicks “ran out, with fans chanting ‘get out of our pub’.” However, suggestions that he was physically manhandled or that punches were thrown were denied.

The Sandon is a popular gathering place for Liverpool fans both before and after games. CCTV footage of the incident will now be examined before it is decided what action, if any, to take.

It is believed no formal complaint has yet been made by club director Hicks Jnr, whose visit on Saturday was the first by anyone from the families of Tom Hicks or George Gillett since fans began demonstrating against their ownership of the club.

The incident is the latest example of the increasing antagonism between supporters and the American co-owners.

Demonstrations have taken place both inside and outside the stadium, while a number of campaigns have been launched by fans discontented with the new regime, including an attempt to buy-out the club and the founding of the Sons of Shankly (SOS) supporters’ union.

Local author Nicky Allt, chairman of SOS, who was not present at the Sandon at the time of Hicks Jnr’s visit, but was told about it afterwards, said: “I was quite surprised he went in there.

“He stood at the bar with his two minders and was left alone to begin with, but then he was approached by a member of the Liverpool supporters’ union.

“He was being asked questions like ‘What’s going on?’, ‘How come the club’s loaded with debt?’, ‘Do Hicks and Gillett speak to each other?’, ‘How can the club be run from Texas?’

“Then more people started butting in.”.

Sandon manager Steven Charnock, who was also not present, said staff told him that Hicks Jnr had run out, to cries of “get out of our pub”.

Tom Hicks Snr has become the target of fans’ anger over the millions of debt he and fellow owner George Gillett have placed on the club, the scaling-back of plans for a new stadium, and the approaches made to Jurgen Klinsmann to replace manager Rafael Benitez.

Following Saturday’s victory, he was reported as saying: “We realise communication is important but it’s a lot better now.

“I’d like to live here because Liverpool is a great place.”

Liverpool FC spokesman Ian Cotton said he had no comment to make regarding the incident at the Sandon.

UNLESS Birmingham City’s Martin Taylor decides to pop into Eduardo’s north London local for a swift half, it would be hard to imagine a more ill-judged pub visit than the one which took place in Anfield on Saturday evening.

Rumours of Tom Hicks junior going for a pint at the Sandon – the very place where Liverpool’s most hardcore support congregates before and after matches – would have been almost impossible to believe had I not seen it with my own eyes.

In a display of bravery beyond the call of family duty or crass stupidity and insensitivity, depending on your point of view, Tommy waltzed into the packed watering hole without a care in the world.

Well, he was surrounded by a team of burly minders, so what is there to care about?

Hicks arrived outside the Sandon an hour after he watched the team his dad so controversially owns beat Middlesbrough 3-2.

Emerging from a silver people carrier, he enjoyed a cigarette outside before pulling out a camera and taking pictures of the exterior of the pub, the birthplace of Liverpool FC.

Even while he was puffing and snapping away, his security were never too far away from him.

Someone had clearly warned them young Tommy may not be too popular in L4 given the way his father is viewed by the vast majority of Liverpool’s fans.

As supporters looked on, some oblivious to who this well protected individual was and others all too well aware, Hicks junior then told his bodyguards he fancied a drink and walked into the pub.

The Sandon may not be a coliseum and it may not have contained any lions but there was an inescapable feeling Roman-style blood sports were about to take place.

Having avoided the main bar, Hicks junior went to the slightly less crowded middle bar and ordered a pint of lager for himself and soft drinks for his always on-duty security guards.

As soon as he spoke, ears began pricking up and people quickly realised the identity of Texan in their midst.

It isn’t exactly difficult to spot a sharp-suited American in a pub full of Adidas Samba wearing locals after all – and word spread around the boozer quicker than news of a goal against Man United.

All of a sudden, the bar was packed as fans flocked from all corners of the Sandon to see if the seemingly unbelievable rumour sweeping the pub was true. And it was.

At first, Hicks junior had nothing more troublesome to cope with than a few direct questions as to why he was there, what his dad was doing with the club and whether or not they were about to sell out to DIC.

Such polite questioning reflected the shock that someone so closely connected with the least popular man at Anfield – apart from Gary Neville – would have the chutzpah to turn up in their midst.

One fan took it upon himself to press Hicks junior on what was going on and interrogated him Paxman-style for a full five minutes.

But while that was going on, the mood was turning increasingly nasty as anger replaced the shock.

A volley of protest songs – aired with increasing regularity on the Kop in recent months – rang out throughout the pub and the venom being directed at Hicks junior was plain for all to see.

All of a sudden, his smile was replaced by a grimace of concern.

And as the volume was cranked up still further by the swollen crowd, Tommy’s facial expression quickly changed.

It appeared to say “Get Me Out Of Here” to his bodyguards.

At least his desire to evacuate showed he had something in common with the fans who, by that stage, had adapted one of their favourite protest songs to inform him, not too politely, that the “lying b******d” should get out of their pub.

Hicks junior has not told any lies of course. And guilt by association is a heavy burden for any son to have to bear.

But as his father’s representative at Anfield on Saturday it borders on the inexplicable that he could have expected anything other than the “welcome” he was given.

As his bodyguards got closer one fan swilled Hicks junior with a pint of lager – and given the price of a pint in the Sandon after the match that’s quite a protest.

Another spat in his direction.

It was ugly and it was nasty. And, perhaps worst of all it was all so avoidable.

As it became increasingly clear things could have been about to go badly wrong, Hicks’ bodyguards decided discretion was indeed the better part of valour. They positioned themselves around him and guided him out of the pub through the hostile crowd and into the people carrier.

His hasty departure was totally at odds with the way he sauntered into the pub.

And yet it is hard to imagine that he expected to get anything other than the reception he got, given the feelings of the fans towards the regime he is a part of.

At best, it was a well meaning attempt to build some bridges on Hicks junior’s part.

At worst, it was yet another failure to understand English football culture and proof of the failure of Liverpool’s owners to grasp just how unpopular they have become.

One thing is for sure – Tom Hicks jnr is unlikely to be going for another pint at the Sandon any time soon.
