I heard that straight from the horseheaded womans mouth at checkin, took me one phone call to my travel agent, and within 5mins I had a bus trip booked to Penang and an email sent to horsehead. See the thing is, what if you go to Thailand to buy a yacht and sail it home? You cant have an outward bound plane ticket

True, IATA in its computer does not say 'flight'. But: flight ticket is officially required. Your 'the thing is' really has nothing to do with this, since the basi rule is: visa is required, except if .... And if you'd like to buy a yacht here I'm sure you can also get yourself a visa.

There is nothing stopping you booking a bus trip out of Thailand, or even saying you are leaving the country on a pleasure craft. This normally confuses the check in staff and stops them in their tracks. The only thing you have to prove is you are leaving Thailand, the airlines dont state by which mode of transport

Officially airticket is required. Any other (claim of) ticket might be accepted or it might not be accepted.

Some Jetstar checkin staff in Australia tell passengers to go buy a train ticket and they will let them travel on a one way. Don't know what happens now that SRT no longer sells tickets online and you need to show I.D. now to buy tickets. Not sure the private train ticket sellers would get back to you before the plane left.

i will be looking at getting a 60 day visa from canberra, or sydney, towards the end of the year, this a matter of the chicken or the egg, when it comes to booking a return flight, from thailand back to perth, however i will be retiring as of the start of my trip to los,can some one please inform me if i do have to have a return flight,as i am looking at a long stay in thailand, i will have sufficient funds in my super and savings to get me by for a few years ahead, when i apply for my visa do i have to show proof of return flight, plus i have been living in australia and working here since 1994, so i will be entitled to the full ozzie penshion.i have travelled many times to los, so i will have no problems picking up rental accommodation in chiang mai or bkk,yes i know i can apply for the o visa, yes i do have 800,000 in my bank account but i would prefer to do visa runs, otherwise one becomes to bogged down staying in the one place too much, plus i like to visit other parts of asia, and use thailand as my base camp.

The plane ticket requirement is applicable for visa exempt entries. For entries with visa there is no plane ticket requirement.

The consulate/embassy may have a plane ticket requirement on their website for visa application, but this is hardly ever enforced.
