Like some of you, I think?, I have been a long term user of CAT's CDMA internet service.

I have used this service for approx. 7 years now and found it excellent for my requirements

although I am sure there are much faster and better systems around, again I am no expert

so don't really know. For some reason, known only to CAT as far as I know, they have decided

to discontinue this service ( If anyone knows why please feel free to tell me ) and have left me

to find an alternative.

For those who have no idea what I am talking about let me explain. CAT cancelled the above

service at 12 midnight on the 26th of April. They sent letters out to subscribers which with the

usual Thai efficiency I received on Sunday the 26th. As the office is closed Sat/Sun I went there

with my missus on Monday where they told me they were open on Sat/Sun to deal with ex CDMA

subscribers who may have been left without the internet after midnight the 26th, TIT, then they

offered me their alternative to replace my lost CDMA subscription, This was in the form of a free

SIM card and a six month 200baht discount per month for the first six months of my new deal.

Unfortunately they did not have any USB modems to support the SIM available in the office on

Monday but they told me that I could buy one from True move or any CAT office. i went to True in

Central and purchased the necessary modem which I tested in the shop and was happy with my

lot and rushed home to catch up on my missed internet weekend.

You can imagine my dismay when I found that I could barely open my E-mail in my condo!!!!

Back to True and bought a true SIM, back home triumphant to find that the true SIM was worse

than the CAT.

Took Computer with modem and SIMs to Cat office and the damn thing worked perfectly.

Yes you have guessed signal/s CAT/True inadequate to my condo.

I am now looking at ADSL line to my condo.

CAT/3BB/TOT all claim free installation but after some further questioning I found that they all had

different ideas of what "free installation" meant. All three have the same deal as far as physical

installation is concerned, they will install the wiring to your building, but you are responsible ( in my

case in a condo ) for any wiring required from their box on the ground floor to your, or my, condo.

TOT will do this "extra" wiring for you at a starting price of 3,000 baht. TOT do not consider your

router as part of your "free" installation, you have to buy your own. CAT and 3BB will supply and

maintain your router and the system for the duration of your contract. CAT will not allow their engineers

to install the 'extra" wiring ( against company policy ) but they said they would give me the wire free.

3BB said I could ask their engineers if they would do it but it was nothing officially to do with 3BB.

Both CAT and 3BB engineers were supposed to appear today but the good old Thai show stopper

turned up, it was raining, so nothing happened.

CAT deal is 690+vat p/m for d/load speed 10mbps / upload 1mbps.

3BB deal is 590+vat p/m for d/load speed 10mbps / upload 512kbps.

I hope that this may be of some help to anyone in the same situation.

As I am far from a computer boffin any informed advice would be gratefully appreciated.

Thanking any and all of you in advance.

Cheers,

Phuketjock

What else to add?

3BB is crap and I'm using 3G on my phone over the WiFi.

Its portable and for just 799 a month I have unlimited data. Much cheaper than the premium 3BB that cost 3800 a month which works on and off. Today has been really bad.

Then you wrote it on your editor and copied it to here. The subject is very interesting for me, but I still can not read it as the sentences are cut in the middle. Please edit the original post and check how it looks in preview or post it again after checking how it looks on the preview.

Well, never mind. If you wish that people read the post, then you'll have to go through the long way.

The current post is not easily readable. I tried that for the first pages and then gave up.

My 3BB is fine. I download at about 1.5 Megabytes per second on well seeded torrents.

3BB customer support is very good - they turned up within an hour the last time - the only time - I had a problem for them to fix (a loose wire at the street pole).

re. installation: they charged me about 1,200 baht for the extra wire needed to connect from the street pole to the computer room. They went into the loft and made all the necessary connections and provided a socket for my ADSL modem/router to connect to.

The ADSL modem/router was free.

Oilinki, I realise that English is not your first language, but there is nothing wrong with the grammar or structure of what he has written. The shortened lines were probably caused by his editor. I can and did read it without problems.

The problem is that the initial post was not formed well for others to read. That's also the reason why we are still talking about the form, rather than the message, which is far more important.

The form is still not fixed.

For each post there are hundred or some more in this forum. Therefore It's kind if the posters would take the time and see how their posts are shown to others. When this is done right, then by all means, we do talk about the message which the posts bring in.

Altogether. This whole talk is stupid and it should have been never talked. We should just talk about the issue which OP brought in.

I beg your pardon - I did not see that the OP had already been edited. I read it only after it had been modified, so I don't know how bad it was originally.

Jetset Thank you for your help that is the kind of assistance I had hoped my thread would

generate. Although your name suggests you are in Bangkok am I right in thinking you are

actually resident in Phuket? The only edit I made to my original post was one spelling correction

and to add the sentence hoping my post would help anyone in the same situation, so you

are reading what I typed in my original post, I have no idea what Oilinks' problem is?

Oh, OK. Let's not dwell on it! But you're right - I haven't lived in Bkk for many years and now live in Phuket. I also haven't been on a jet for years so my nickname is really not very accurate! biggrin.png

Update, Just had the 3BB reps ( two young ladies ) round and at first they tried to tell me that

the router would cost 650 baht but after the missus informed them that their shop had told us

that the router was included in the free installation no charge. The extra cable required from the

ground floor to my condo quoted about 2,000 baht so not bad if true for over 5 floors. 1 Yr.Contract

signed by missus, 3 months rental deposit paid job done hopefully.

Promise the engineers will be here tomorrow and I should be up and running by Tuesday evening,

I will keep you posted. thumbsup.gif

Hans your input to the thread is greatly appreciated but unfortunately you seem to be the lone poster

who has had any significant problems with 3BB and I hope I will not be joining you after Tuesday.

Thanks for your time.

No problem. I have been checking my hardware and I think it could be my linksys router. I have reverted just now to the 3BB free router which is Ethernet cabled and its seems to be working now uninterrupted for an hour.

Just no wireless now.

Can you recommend me another wireless router?

This is actually the 2nd linksys I've had and the other died in similar circumstance. No more with this brand.

I am sorry Hans my very limited computer knowledge does not run anywhere close to wireless

routers perhaps Jetsetbkk or Steven1 may be able to help you, sorry.

Glad to hear your 3BB may be OK after all. thumbsup.gif

I'm more interested to hear from hans how he has one that, since I'm considering to change my 3BB ethernet router for my own wireless. Any settings to change to go from a wire connection to a wireless connection? Any router recommendations?

Type 192.168.1.1 into the browser and hit enter, this takes you into the wireless router settings.

Copied down the settings via a screenshot and used them to configure the cheap shit Huawei one.

Username and password and port settings are the key ones to remember.

3BB give it to you over the phone in minutes if you get stuck. Best customer service of any company I've dealt with in Thailand.

Funny, I've never had a problem with that Huawei wireless gateway from 3BB. Nor have I had a problem with my Linksys router that I use with my cable modem. Yes I have two ISPs here. I did set them up myself though. The guy that tried to install my gateway from 3BB was fairly clueless but he learned a few things. I'm sure they are better than they were several years ago! I agree with you that you will need your 3BB account username and password to set up your login to PPP/WAN if you are going to change to a different gateway device.

Update, Job done everyone involved from 3bb very helpful and could not have done more.

Computer now whizzing along, I would recommend 3bb to anyone having problems with

their internet service. Thank you all for your input.

Went to the 3BB shop, and it's really easy. They sell the router, 750 Baht, with all settings already done. Simply change the router, done. Price remains the same as well.
