Uproar over double zero lottery result

BANGKOK: Yesterday’s government lottery results were greeted with uproar as the last two winning numbers were 00.

Government Lottery Office (GLO) director Surasit Sangkapong rejected claims of result-fixing, saying the draw was conducted with transparency and witnessed by media representatives and members of the public.

He described yesterday’s result as “purely a matter of chance”.

Surasit insisted that he and members of the drawing committee had carefully checked the machinery used in the draw beforehand.

The 00 combination was also the winning two-digit combination on August 16 last year.

Some of those attending yesterday’s draw said recent winning numbers had too often included such “less likely” combinations as 55, 77, 22 and 00.

The GLO made Bt1.4 billion on the sale of two- and three-digit lottery numbers in yesterday’s draw. The most common numbers bought were 14 and 714, as punters appeared eager to try their luck on the recent Valentine’s Day celebration, Surasit said.

The agency would have to pay out a total of just Bt500 million in prize money to gamblers buying winning numbers, with only Bt1.5 million going to those who picked 00, he said.

It's hard to believe that people are stupid enough to think that results like "00", "55", "44", etc., are any "less likely" than any other results. Perhaps the Thai education system needs to beef up its statistics program.
