Birds Nest In My Boot

Recommended Posts

About 2 weeks ago I discovered a birds nest in one of my old boots. I thought my gf must have put it in there as a joke because the boot is on top of a plastic 4 draw stacker , 2 feet from my front door.

On Sunday I took another look and was shocked to find 3 eggs in the nest :o

I have moved the stacker and boot to the other side of the carport away from my door.

Since Sunday I have been keeping an eye on the nest.

The mother looks like a smaller version of a British magpie. She's got quite a long tail and a beautiful song. The 3 eggs are pale blue with brown squiggles.

I have 2 dogs in the garden. My bulldog is to lazy to be bothered about anything that moves. My other dog is a shitpoo (shitzu-poodle mix) and he should have been named Satan. If it's smaller than him , he'll kill it.

I am worried that when the eggs hatch Satan will try to get the chicks.

Do you think I should put the boot up in one of the trees in my garden or is it best to leave it alone ?

By the way I'm going to take some pics tonight when I get home, just in case you think I'm pulling your pecker. With luck (and some guidence ) I will post the pics tomorrow.

Hi Kurgen

I don't think it is a good idea to move the nest, I doubt very much that the bird would return once you have interferred with the nest. On the other hand I don't really have any suggestions other than fencing the area off temporarily to keep ShitPoo away. Eagerly await photo of nest and pooch :o

Good advice from the last poster. I don't think it is a good idea to move it, the mother would be confused (shouldn't she be sitting on it though?) Negligent bird mother!

Could you keep your dog away from it. In my experience, dogs are like children,if they know it will upset you if they do something............................

Is this her....or is it him? :o

Asian magpie bird:

LaoPo

It's a "him" :D

A Magpie Robin copsychus saularis (นกกางเขน in Thai because in flight the white and black plumage looks like a cross).

This is the male - the female has dark grey plumage in place of the glossy black of the male.

Very common in Thailand, but an attractive bird with a loud, melodious and varied song.

They look like the eggs of a quail... tasty :o

Now, now...not nice to make jokes like that around us animal lovers...

Agree with not moving the nest more than you have to. I learned as a child that if you move a nest to a new location, the mother will no longer recognize it as her own, and in my experience that is true. When forced to move a nest because it's in an unsafe location, move it as little as possible so mama still accepts it.

The bird in the picture does have a fondness for choosing odd nesting places. In my yard, same type of bird made a nest out of the little funnel atop the large water filter attached to the water tank and likewise spawned 3 eggs. Created some inconvenience but I let them be and was rewarded by the cute sight of 2 hatched baby birds. She attempted to repeat this feat again but alas the rains came turning what had been an ideal incubator into a pool of water.

Moral of the story being, these birds tend to repeat successful nesting choices, so if you don't want your boot permanently appropriated for that purpose, hide it where she can't get to it after the babies have hatched and grown.

Pictures, pictures!

I did take a picture yesterday but the chicks are just huddled together and don't look like much at all.

I looked in today and they were actually looking up so I will get a pic tomorrow.

1 egg still hasn't hatched yet, does this mean it won't now ?

Well on the 15th when I got home I noticed that there was no sign of the chick. It did seem to have all its feathers so hopefully Satan the shitpoo didn't get it.

I've been meaning to throw the nest away ever since, but have been far too busy propping up my local bar.

I finaly got round to it this morning but discovered a single egg in the nest.

I don't think they're Asian Magpies, more likely an Asian Bunnybirds , cos they're certainly breeding like rabbits.

Oh well, they do sing a nice tune :o
