Many people turned up at Siriraj Hospital early yesterday to express their loyalty to Their Majesties The King and Queen ahead of the ceremony at the Grand Palace to mark the anniversary of the King

BANGKOK: -- His Majesty King Bhumibol Adulyadej did not attend the royal ceremony marking the anniversary of his coronation at the Grand Palace yesterday due to health reasons.

His Majesty assigned HRH Crown Prince Maha Vajiralongkorn to perform the royal ceremony on his behalf. Also present were the Crown Prince's Royal Consort, HRH Princess Srirasmi, and the Prince's younger sister HRH Princess Maha Chakri Sirindhorn.

The royal ceremony was held at the Amarin Winitchai Throne Hall inside the Grand Palace yesterday morning.

His Majesty's presence at the ceremony was cancelled at the last minute. The Royal Household Bureau announced via a statement yesterday that the team of royal doctors asked that His Majesty refrain from royal duties for some time.

The much-beloved King, 85, has been receiving medical treatment at Siriraj Hospital for a few years. However, he has sometimes headed out to preside over important royal ceremonies.

On Saturday, the Royal Household Bureau confirmed that His Majesty and Her Majesty Queen Sirikit would leave the hospital yesterday morning for the ceremony marking his coronation at the Grand Palace.

A huge number of people turned up at Siriraj Hospital at dawn yesterday to express their loyalty to Their Majesties. Wearing either yellow or pink, many other people lined the route to the Grand Palace in hope of getting a glimpse of Their Majesties or to chant "Long Live Their Majesties" when the royal motorcade moved past. The colours yellow and pink are associated with His Majesty.

The Royal Household Bureau announced yesterday that while the King's lung inflammation had eased and he could sleep, he still ate just a little and had some fatigue.

"Antibiotics are being given intravenously," the bureau said in a statement.

Land transport agency to file graft complaint with DSI

BANGKOK, 6 May 2013 (NNT) - The Land Transport Federation of Thailand is set to request that the Department of Special Investigation conduct an extensive probe on alleged systematic corruption at the Port Authority of Thailand (PAT).

The federation's chief adviser and executive Thongyu Khongkhan said the PAT is the only agency that collects bribes which has exponentially increased the operators’ overhead. He made known that by putting an end to the agency’s graft, the transport sector’s gross domestic product will likely be boosted.

Earlier this year, the federation told the press that shipping operators have been forced to pay bribes to PAT employees in charge of the machines that lift cargo containers.

The agency has already forwarded their complaint to the National Anti-Corruption Commission and the Senate Standing committee on Transport. The matter has yet to be concluded by either of the two boards.

Medical expert indicated breast cancer is Thai woman's No.1 threat

Bangkok, 6 May 2013, (NNT) Medical expert has indicated that breast cancer is the number one cause of death of Thai women.

According to Secretary General of the Thanyarak Foundation Dr. Thammanit Angsusing (ธรรมนิตย์ อังศุสิงห์), breast cancer has surpassed cervix cancer as the number one threat against women in the past 18 years, citing a U.S. research that by 2020 breast cancer would become the number one form of cancer affecting female population in developing countries, including Thailand.

He also expressed concerns over the mammogram, saying that the method is complicated and that it would take at least another 20 years for the method used in Thailand to be as effective as the one in the U.S. Dr. Thammanit concluded that self breast screening remains the best way to detect the cancer.

The foundation has initiated a campaign promoting breast screening in 19 provinces by re-examining the data compiled by the Health Department 10 years ago . The foundation secretary general said that the screening should be done correctly and regularly, adding that fatality rate would reduce if the cancer is found and treated at an early stage.

According to Dr. Thammanit, if any woman detects a lump in her breast, she should immediately consult her doctor, whether or not the lump inflicts pain upon contacts.

He suggests women aged above 35 perform breast screening at least once a month.

Embankment construction delayed on Myanmar's petition
The Nation May 6, 2013 5:02 pm

Ranong has discontinued the construction of embankment along Kraburi River, following a petition from Myanmar.

Myanmar said the embankment leads to a change in the current direction, which may flood villages on its side and alter the border line.

Ranong Governor Cherdsak Jampates said that the construction is delayed to nurture the positive relationship between the two countries. He said that joint discussion could be held, to explain the necessity of the project to the Myanmar side as well as to fine-tune necessary modification.

Thai villages located along the river have been suffering from serious corrosion in the past years. Embankments are planned in 8 points, with combined length of 2km.
