Don't know what's going on but this year we have more tokay than at any time over the last 6 years. We have hundreds of them. Had a couple in the house too. Have not had them inside before. Global warming? Unusual weather this year?

Saw on the Thai news a couple time recently of tokay being found with 2 tails, 2 heads and so forth. Coincidentally almost all in Chiang Mai, Lampang, Lamphun, etc. Supposed to be incredibly good luck to find one of these rarities.

I was originally going to say about the same thing. That is until I googled Tokays and they do have a rather nasty bite and their salica carries a bacteria similar to the monitor lizards.

Well, they are lizards, so not entirely surprising.

I have heard many stories about the brother of a friends cousin who had his face bitten off by a Tookay, I am yet to meet that man in person.

No one I know, friends or passing acquaintances, either Thai or western that has every suffered more than a sleepless night caused by a male one that is horny and lonely.

You ignore them, they are more than happy to ignore you, if you want to befriend one on the other hand, they do like Spam.

What.. tell that to any grasshopper.. They are most certainly very deadly to almost any insect. And small mammals and reptiles.

The only time I got nervous was when I saw one in my bedroom peeking from behind the curtain. He was a big one and kept crawling along the wall towards me while I was on the bed. I would move and he would go back behind the curtain. Took a long anxious time to finally get him to go out the door. Don't know where he went in the house after that but was a bit cautious walking around for the next couple of days.

they are not venomous, will not attack unless provoked (they can be really nasty though), their saliva is not like that of the komodo dragon (or common monitor for that matter)

they are, in my opinion very useful to have around

there are about 10 sharing my house on koh phangan with me, and they will venture indoors whenever they can, but they avoid humans and always make their way back outside.

the only downside is they shit like crazy, and the turds are not small.

this is not my photo but i have witnessed a couple of centipede/tokay battles and they can get bloody.

Many lizard species carry a horrendous amount of bacteria as you stated the Tokays are one of them, in fact they carry up to 10 types of salmonella. I wouln't say they're bite is worse than a komodo dragon, and a komodo uses this debilating bacteria as a hunting tool, biting an animal and then tracking it for days until it is too weak to fend off the komodo.

But Tokay geckos are not be ignored, not truly feared, but given some respect for the bites they can give.

Which is awesome as many centipedes have enough venom to kill up to 40lb/18kg animals.

I used to have a pet centipede, the thing was voracious and just plain nasty, fed it pinky mice, didn't even have to clean up bones!

I like them and enjoy having them around. I sure was surprised when I was told what was causing that loud noise from so small a creature. The little ceiling gekos also make a loud noise for such a small lizard. I was wakened one night by a Tokay on the spare pillow beside my bed and expected a far larger creature. He scampered up the wall when I turned the light on.

Kinomo Dragons are the Japanese cousins of the komodo dragon. their males are crossdressers wearing kimonos. why they call their outfit "kinomo" is not known yet.

It's their mating season now. The other day, I saw to going at it. Fascinating lizard porn. Before I could get my camera, they were done. "Does that remind you of someone?" asked Mrs. T.

Even she's a comedian now. This reminded me of a Danny Bhoy standup about Australian geckos:

quite a few references to the Tokay's painful bite, but not a mention of venom, with or without kimono!

LOL, no worries. Having fun more than anything else. If you go to youtube and look for 'tokay bite' you will find some vids of guys letting themselves get bitten just to show the gecko's temper.

They're Luis Suarez' little reptillian brother, pretty ferocious but overall mostly harmless.

I'd MUCH rather get bitten by a gecko than by a dog actually. (And a dog bite is a lot more likely too).

Now it's the swarms of flying termites at night that will get into the house if you leave the lights on you should worry about. If you stay very still they might not bite. And one or two bites aren't usually fatal. 'Winged Centipedes', the locals call them.

When living in PNG a freshly arrived chick expressed similar concerns about gekko's.

I told her to wear black socks to bed and she would have no problems.

She went out and bought some and wore them to bed ...... and did so for the next two months until some one wised her up.
