I am planning on living in BKK for approx 16 months and have a few questions in regards to my visa. I know a multi entry visa would allow me to stay for 9 months but am not sure if I can extend it further? I will be going to school here and could apply for an ED visa but since I will only be attending for 2-3 months, I wasn't sure if an ED visa would cover my entire stay. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

No visa will cover that period of stay. Would appears a 3 entry tourist visa would be your best choice if in a western country where it can be obtained as you can study on that type of entry. You would then have to obtain new visas for the remainder of your stay in the local area where 2 entry tourist visa is likely to be the most available and perhaps only once as any one location.

If you were to enroll in a school before departing you might be able to get a multiple entry ED visa that would give you unlimited 90 day entries for a year which can give you almost 15 months without getting a new visa.

A 3 entry tourist visa would give you almost 9 months by extending each 60 day entry by 30 days at immigration and doing 3rd entry just before visa expires. Then a two entry from Laos embassy would give you almost 6 months more.

The above would depend upon where you apply for the visa in your home country. If there are honorary consulates there they would be the best choice.
