Growing Lavender

Featured Replies

I love lavender and I was wondering if anyone has been successful growing this plant here, specificaly in the South?

If it's possible then variety is best for this climat?

I am not a gardener by any means but I want to get more into it.

I have only ever grown lavender in the UK. All I can say is it grows like crazy. After a few seasons it gets so big you have to split it from the roots up. You then plant (or give away) the part you split.

The only problem I can think of when growing it in warmer climes may be that it needs to winter and LOS may not be cold enough. I'd plant a few in various locations and see what happens - I love lavender!

Best of gardeners luck, may your fingers be green.

So, all I need now is to find out where to buy the plants or seeds. Is it available in Thailand?

I have had seeds sent to me from my sister before. The postman sent a note asking that I go to the central post office. I had to produce my passport and open the package in front of them for inspection. Once they were happy that the pack was not dodgy they send me on my way seeds and all.

Gisele, I don't think Lavender would survive here, the heat and humidity would do it in. It is essentially a Mediterranean plant so altho it could probably handle heat and it could handle humidity the two together would be tough. I have tried for many years to grow it and have always failed.

When you go home why don't you buy some seeds from a specialty seed store, specifically one that caters to the Southern US region, that way you'll be sure to get one more acclimatized to a hot humid climate.

My memories of the beautiful lavender fields in the South of France, is the lack of humidity in mid-summer, but good luck. :o

Lavender is big in Tasmania ... Probably too hot and humid in Thailand though :o

Naka.

And plant it in really, really, well drained soil. In a year or two you can let us know how you got on...
