PLOUGHING CEREMONY
Forecast for abundant crops, rain

The Nation

30206074-01_big.jpg

BANGKOK: -- HRH Crown Prince Maha Vajiralongkorn yesterday presided over the Royal Ploughing Ceremony at Sanam Luang. HRH Princess Srirasmi accompanied him.

Predictions from the ceremony suggested abundant crops and huge rainfall this year.

Paddy fields in upland areas would prosper while those in lowlying areas may face some damage, according to the predictions.

The forecasts were based on the choices of food selected by the Sacred Oxen, Phra Kho Fah and Phra Kho Sai, and a fabric piece chosen by the Lord of the Ploughing Ceremony.

The sacred oxen were offered seven bowls containing grass, paddy, corn, sesame seeds, soy bean, water and liquor. They chose to eat corn and grass.

Phraya Raek Na was offered three pieces of fabric, each with a different length. The one he selected proved to be onemetrelong.

The Royal Ploughing Ceremony ran from 8.19am to 8.59am yesterday.

Permanent secretary of the Agriculture Ministry Chawalit Chukhachorn served as Phraya Raek Na or the Lord of the Ploughing Ceremony.

This annual ceremony is held in May every year to boost the morale of farmers.

The Rice Department handed out 1,414 kilograms of rice seeds to the people gathering at Sanam Luang. The seeds came from the royal fields. Farmers usually keep the seeds for good luck.

Storage plans for National Museum treasures
The Nation

BANGKOK: -- The Fine Arts Department will request a Bt500-million budget to build a large new warehouse to store historical artefacts now that a facility under the National Museum in Pathum Thani is full.

More than 30,000 artefacts are not stored properly at the Pathum Thani facility, said director-general Sahawat Naenna. The new warehouse, which would serve as a communal storage, is meant to ease the burden on the National Museum while also accommodating new artefacts - either items yet to be discovered, or others returned from collectors worldwide, he added.

A separate Bt42 million in transport costs would be requested in a five-year departmental plan starting next year, he said.

The items will be categorised at the new warehouse, which will also store another 10,000 pieces scattered in the department's custody at various locations around the country or in private possessions.

The department is set to acquire a number of significant artefacts from abroad, after foreign collectors agreed to return them to Thailand. They include three collectors holding 30 shadow-play figures, a number of ancient Buddha images from a Japanese collector, and items from a Chicago-based museum.

Thai-Belgian Bridge back in service

BANGKOK, 14 May 2013 (NNT) – The deputy Bangkok governor has inspected the Thai-Belgian Bridge prior to its reopening today (May 14) after having been closed since March 5th.

The 25-year-old bridge had been closed for repairs for 60 days, and is now reopened. The Thai-Belgian Bridge which crosses the Sathon-Rama IV intersection was inspected by Mr. Jumpol Sumpaopol, a Deputy Bangkok Governor.

After the inspection, Mr. Jumpol said the bridge was ready for service and its reopening would help ease heavy traffic when the new school term begins. However, he believes that the traffic will be bad in the first two weeks, but it will alleviate as time goes by.

The Deputy Governor further revealed that the Bangkok Metropolitan Administration has a plan to close down the Thai-Japanese Friendship Bridge for repairs as well during September and October this year.
