A pick-up truck was intercepted by an investigation team from Regional Customs Bureau 4 while heading to Chana district of the southern border province of Songkhla with a cargo of the protected species , en route to Bangkok in order to await transfer across border.

Eighty-nine pangolins were hidden in the vehicle. The truck driver escaped.

The animals were then transferred to Ton-ngachang Wildlife Breeding Center in nearby Hat Yai district and were to be released later into the wild.

Pangolin scales and pangolin flesh are in high demand in Vietnam and China as medicine although their international trade is banned.

The smuggling and sale of pangolins is prohibited under the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (CITES). (MCOT online news)
