Police examine the Asia Hotel in Narathiwat

NARATHIWAT :-- Six injured as home-made explosive goes off in Narathiwat's Asia Hotel

Four suspects were arrested yesterday in connection with an explosion at a Narathiwat hotel in the morning that left six people injured.

The bombing took place at around 11am at Asia Hotel, in Sungai Kolok district of the southernmost Muslim-majority province. Room Nos 306 and 307 on the third floor of the hotel were severely damaged. The impact of the explosion brought down the ceilings of both rooms.

An explosive ordnance disposal team inspected the hotel following the explosion. Police said they believed the explosion was caused by a home-made explosive device weighing at least five kilograms. The bomb was hidden in a bin that served as an ashtray.

Police are trying to find out whether the hotel was the target of the insurgent attack or whether a bomb intended for an attack elsewhere went off prematurely while insurgents were putting it together, according to hotel owner Amporn Wongthirarit.

Six persons - five women and one man - were wounded in the explosion. All of them were sent to Sungai Kolok Hospital for treatment.

Asia Hotel is not far from the Pro Computer and OA Thailand companies, which were severely damaged by a car bombing on July 20 last year.

Police arrested four men yesterday after studying video recordings from security cameras fitted just opposite the hotel. The four suspects had checked in at rooms near the ones where the explosion occurred. They, however, denied any involvement.

Two other suspects were found to have checked into Room 306 and left the hotel suspiciously after the explosion occurred, police said. One of the men was identified as Sulaiman Yapa, a local resident. Police were hunting for him for further clues in the case.

Meanwhile, two more people were killed in the deep South yesterday in what were believed to be insurgent attacks.

Defence volunteer Mayunai Waebusa was shot dead at his home in Narathiwat's Rusoh district. His wife said that a group of assailants came to her home in a pickup truck and fired several shots at her husband.

In another attack, 71-year-old Pattani resident Salae Kadir was shot dead in a drive-by attack late in the morning while he was walking to a mosque. Police investigating the attack said it could be the work of insurgents.

By Digital Media

NARATHIWAT, May 19 -- Narathiwat governor Apinan Suetanuwong on Sunday said that an investigation into yesterday's bombing of the Asia Hotel in Su-ngai Kolok district is underway, with six suspects taken in for questioning.

Following the questioning, the suspects were all believed involved in the incident, Mr Apinan said. The governor urged the authorities to compile all the evidence before filing charges against the six, as well as to work on the case carefully.

Two suspects seen in surveillance camera footage were identified as Sulaiman Yapa and Tameesi Jeyor. They were taken for questioning shortly after the explosion.

Four others-- Abu Nhikamrai, Nasueree Daemaoleng, Adiyas Jaesu and Ruslan Doloh-- were detained later the same day at Su-ngai Kolok railway station.

The four suspects were presumed to be related to Mr Sulaiman and Mr Tameesi.

In a related development, Pol Maj Kitti Munkong led officials to examine a house in Muno subdistrict, Su-ngai Kolok district where the four suspects had stayed.

The bombing on the third floor of Asia Hotel wounded at six people and destroyed hotel rooms 306 and 307. The explosion brought down the ceilings of both rooms.

After the inspection, police believed that the bomb was a homemade explosive device, weighing at least five kilogrammes. The bomb was hidden in a dust bin that served as ashtray for smokers.

I realize the camers that record in the vicinity of crimes, acts of terroism, etc can be a vaulable aid. But its sometimes seems after review of the film, anyone the police can identify are deemed suspects, questioned, hunted down, surrender, etc and then they are required to prove innocense. The reason for bringing up this observation is that there seem to be a large number of suspects who are never charged but released after a few weeks or month, for lack of evidence.

When the muslims realize , how incompetent the thai police and military really are ,this place is going to be worst then northern Ireland , the british were competent. the thai news media only reports bombing that they have to that are high profile. think about all the unreported shootings and bombing on a daily basis=chaos

The militants are well organised & I'm sure they are aware of the capabilities within the RTP, military and other security agencies.

With the British Army, security agencies and politicians it still took 30 years and 3523 deaths from the re-ignition of "The Troubles" to bring about a lasting peace accord in Northern Ireland. How many more years for a mutually agreeable political resolution to the conflict in the deep South?

That's exactly what I thought.

" The bomb was hidden in a bin that served as an ashtray."

Whereas the British forces were competent in their own intelligence organizations, when it came to intelligence sharing then it was another story. The deep mistrust between the various units (RUC, UDR, 14 Int, MI5, MI6, Naval Int, etc) greatly reduced the competency. How the number of 'blue on blue' incidents remained so low with so many 'players' on the field was incredible.

This is one of the factors we are seeing in the South. Without proper correlation you don't have reliable intelligence, without reliable intelligence you don't have a true course of action to maximize results.
