Does anyone know where I can buy one? Ideally a secondhand one, failing that a new one.

Thanks in advance.

No doubt they will have Thai characters. They still use typewriters at the Land Office to type stuff on Chanotes, etc.

I apologize for not remembering the name of this place--but it's on Chang Moi Road. At Mike's Burgers proceed toward the mighty Ping. On the left you will pass several rattan and furniture stores. A long block or so from Moon Muang Road, exactly where Chang Moi bends left, keep a sharp lookout for a small shop with strange office equipment in the widow (time clocks, adding machines, a couple of old standard typewriters, etc.) This is a place that time forgot...

In a basement workshop, surrounded by mountains of 20th century leftovers (mostly pre-electronic), is one man who cleans and repairs typewriters. The shop also stocks typewriter ribbons and--to answer your question--sells secondhand machines, mostly with English alphabet characters. Occasionally they have a portable in stock; last week I saw only non-electric standards.

I hope this proves helpful...

Here's a thought too... Do you need an actual typewriter, or just looking to recreate typewritten-looking pages? There are free fonts available for computers in several different typewriter fonts, from old, cracked letters, smudged openings, broken serifs, etc., as well as clean looking too.

Thanks for your help. I have excessive tremor syndrom in my hands and make out a shopping list and then can't read it!

I willl try the shop mgbcnx suggests.

This is my good neighbor that is requesting a typewriter and I am trying to convince her to get one of the mini MP3 players that I think have a voice activated recording function. I've seen Chinese knock offs for small baht, but can't remember where. Maybe someone knows where and how much??

She mainly needs it for writing shopping lists, but does have trembles in her hand and has a hard time writing and then reading her handwriting.............me too!

or maybe someone can suggest another option or technology that would help her??

If you have an iPod Touch or iPad, there are voice recognition note takers. I use two Apps that work well:

Notes - free and English only.

Voice Texter - About $2 when I bought it. Works with many languages, including Asian languages.

Both are fairly good with few mistakes. You can then easily print out your list.

I'm sure similar Apps are available for Android OS as well.

I should have mentioned that she is looking for the lowest tech possible and user friendliness is a big plus. That's why she was looking for a manual typewriter.

Carrefour sold typewriters, guess most office shops sell them like B2S in Central, and at pawnshops they have old ones though at those shops they might be not cheaper then new ones.

And here are typewriter fonts free to download.

I was window shopping on Amazon.com and saw the new generation of voice recorders that were as small as a USB flash drive, in fact some doubled as a flash drive. They could easily be held on a ribbon, piece of string or a gold necklace and carried around your neck.

Has anyone seen these here in CM??

Here's the address of the typewriter shop I mentioned earlier:

CHIANGMAIMANAPANICH

182/11-12 Changmoi Road

Tel: 053-233391

Two standard typewriters for sale, currently displayed in the shop window...

(This little place carries stationery supplies, including several lines of, get ready: carbon paper. I haven't seen a sheet of that stuff in fifteen years! By the way, right next to this shop is a store that sells musical instruments.)

So, if you're walking down Changmoi Road, at the bend, on the left you will first see the shop selling band instruments--very obvious. Just beyond, also on the left, is the store selling secondhand typewriters...
