It looks like I'm going to overstay 2 days! Will there be a problem with me flying out and back into Thailand apart from the border fine?

Probably not - but you will run a slight risk of arrest and jail pending trial if found prior to reaching exit point.

Same thing happened to me earlier this year, actually was 3 days I think. Was flying out via BKK ... paid the fee at the airport ... return a month later on my regular rotation. I was nervous as hell, but all went smoothly and the Immigration guys at the airport were friendly and professional.

I met one guy who didn't know he was overstaying. he said to the officer he did a mistake when planing his travel. that s it, he paid 500 baths and took the flight.

That would be a 1 day overstay, which at airports is waived.

waived since when?

anyway in Thailand you pay what you want. give 200 bats to the guy, say you don't want wait for a receipt because waiting for a receipt will delay you.

If one day of overstay when leaving via an airport it is not charged - this has been the policy for ages. Only if more than one day will you have to pay all.

There must be a lot of overstays in Thailand. At immigration in Aranyaphrahet they have three kinds of counters: "Thai", "Foreigner", and "Overstay/Group Tour". dry.png

At most airports up to 24 hours of overstay is waived.

Never would happen. Immigration is not that easy.

Just a fresh data point - August 1, 2013

Charged 500 Baht for one day overstay (~6 hours, actually) and stamped/noted in passport; tourist visa, US passport, at DMK.
