A wave of coordinated attacks shook Pattani Province on the night of 25 June, as a group of at least 10 armed men stormed and set fire to the Plen Subdistrict Administrative Organisation (SAO) building in Sai Buri District, destroying four vehicles and leaving behind what appeared to be explosive devices at multiple sites across two districts. The incident occurred around 21:00 in Ban Cha-ae, Moo 2, Plen Subdistrict, prompting police, firefighters and emergency response teams to rush to the scene. By the time they arrived, flames were already engulfing the lower floor of the two-storey SAO building and had spread to four parked vehicles, a fire truck, a rubbish collection truck and two pickup trucks, all of which were destroyed despite over an hour of intensive firefighting. Investigators discovered petrol residue throughout the building and garage, and found signs of forced entry through the rear wall, indicating the attackers had carefully planned their approach and escape route. According to witnesses, three SAO staff on night duty were held at gunpoint and ordered to remain silent while the attackers carried out the arson. A fourth staff member who arrived during the attack was met with warning gunfire, prompting him to flee. The attackers split into two groups, one targeting the vehicles and the other entering the building to pour petrol inside, focusing on the registration office, where vital documents and IT equipment were completely destroyed. Following the incident, Sai Buri Police Superintendent Pol. Col. Theerapot Yindee led forensic officers to inspect the scene, where several key pieces of evidence were recovered. A 500-metre search radius was locked down and CCTV footage from the surrounding area is under review. Authorities suspect the attackers are local insurgents with intimate knowledge of the terrain, possibly aiming to create public fear rather than harm civilians. Simultaneously, at around 21:50, police in Kapho District received reports of four suspicious objects resembling bombs placed at strategic locations: 1. A roadside near Ban Utae Buraeng, Moo 2, Talo Dueraman Subdistrict 2. Moo 3 area of Karubi Subdistrict 3. A barricade outside Ban Mue Lo School, Moo 4, Plong Hoi Subdistrict 4. Ban Mue Lo Bridge, Moo 7, Plong Hoi Subdistrict The objects were spherical, black and weighed about 1 kilogram each. Authorities cordoned off all four sites and explosive ordnance disposal (EOD) teams confirmed the devices were real explosives. In a related act of sabotage, tyres were set alight and spiked nails scattered on a road in Ban Kao Tai, Moo 2, Bang Kao Subdistrict, Sai Buri District, forcing authorities to close the road for safety inspections. The coordinated nature of these incidents has led investigators to believe they are the work of insurgents attempting to destabilise the region and challenge state authority. While no injuries were reported, the attacks have heightened security fears in Sai Buri, Kapho and Mai Kaen districts. Security agencies are now on high alert and are expanding patrols to prevent further unrest. Although no group has officially claimed responsibility, intelligence reports had warned of potential attacks targeting state officials in the deep South. Authorities continue to stress that no civilians appear to have been targeted and that the objective of the attackers was likely to provoke fear and test the government’s response. UPDATE Phuket Governor Assures Public After Suspicious Devices Found Picture courtesy of Khoasod. Phuket authorities have confirmed that the situation is now under control following the discovery of three suspicious devices locations around the island. Provincial Governor Sophon Suwannarat chaired an emergency security meeting on the afternoon of 26 June, after the items were found and neutralised at Phuket International Airport, Patong Beach and Promthep Cape.
