TAT: Tuesday blackout has posed no impact on Thai tourism

BANGKOK, 23 May 2013 (NNT) – The Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT) has come out to assure that the blackout that hit 14 southern Provinces on Tuesday has not had any impact on the tourism sector.

TAT Governor Suraphon Svetasreni said on Wednesday that the biggest blackout Thailand has seen in over 3 decades has not posed any negative impact on the travel industry just yet.

Mr. Suraphon stated that several hotels have been equipped with their own back-up generators, therefore, the brownout that lasted a few hours on Tuesday night did not directly hit the tourism business.

Mr. Suraphon’s affirmation was based on reports from TAT offices across the country.

Meanwhile, Tourism Council of Thailand President Piyaman Tejapaibul added that a number of major hotels in the South have confirmed that they were not troubled by the brownout although many believe the situation could have psychological effect on travelers.

The TAT Governor said that all agencies involved in energy should start planning long-term solutions while major tourist destinations should now consider back-up plans for the future.

TAT always come out with these comments whenever anything happens in Thailand.

It didn't effect tourism because the tourists were already here when the power went off.

What is a "Brownout" as opposed to a "Blackout" Is that like turning the switch 75% off so the lights are only dimmed?

Tourists bring money, lots of it and that is the main concern.

It doesnt matter if the Thai industry suffered or that the majority of tourist and Thai's suffered, at least SOME of the bigger hotels didnt suffer. We are all grateful to T A T for that. T A T lives in a world of its own, to hell with the people that are getting murdered in the south, or any other problems. Money is the important thing. They need to worry about the tourist dollars.

They can not even stay on tract on this article. Standby generators run by hotels and other organisations have no impact on whether the power failure was a brown out or a black out.

It was indeed a black out in most regions where the grid was down with no power available. A brown out is where there is partial supply to cetain sectors. This was a black out, a total power failure over an expansive region.

Spot on, tourists already here and how many overseas cancelled their plans when they heard there was no power ? The TAT, like so many agencies, feesl obliged to be reassuring when something happens but always open their mouths without engaging what little brains they have.

Was on Samui when the power went off for a few moments, bout 30 minutes later reception came to my room to explain there was a severe blackout how ever the Hotel had a back-up generator that powers the lights and air-conditioning but not the water pumps and asked us to refrain from using the toilet.

I mentioned that I needed to take a dump and that maybe I should go for a swim in the ocean instead if the toilet had no water...............she giggled.

Actually it was a pain in the ass as the missus and I had just showered and were to head over to Chaweang Beach for dinner followed by a few drinks somewhere..............instead I had to spend the night with her...... nice that the hotel bar was within ear shot of my pool villa so ordering more beers was easy.

Nothing can harm tourism, when it comes to their (TAT's) expertease.

Gentlemen - the power was off for an hour or so which is the norm in Thailand every few weeks. It will not affect tourism in the slightest, but must be a boon for media with nothing really of interest to report..
