First off, you need the to get the number plate sorted. Take your green book and any other paperwork to the vehicle department to get the registration translated into Roman script, 250 baht or so. As I live out in the sticks I was sent to Hat Yai as smaller provinces don't/can't do it.

Once you have this you can go to a shop that makes number plates and have a sticker made with your car registration. Make sure they make the sticker with the full province name as last year the Malay customs told us that abbreviations are no longer acceptable. Eg. - AB1234 SRT (Surat Thani) must be written in full.

Thai driver's license is OK and insurance can be sorted out at most border crossings. You get a big square piece of paper to display on your dashboard as well as the policy paperwork.

Malaysian police are a lot stricter than the Thai police, radar speed checks are not uncommon. It used to be 300 Ringgit (3000 baht) for each speeding offence.

A four door pick up is only allowed to carry five people maximum. Five seats = five passengers.

If you're heading down to Penang you'll have to pay toll fees, it's called Touch 'n Go. Have some Malay Ringgits ready. You can't exchange them legally in Thailand but there's plenty of places in Hat Yai that'll change baht to Ringgit - 10 baht = 1 Ringgit approximately.

Hope this has helped.

Thank you. I want to drive to SIN through Cameron Highlands, Tioman, Penang and maybe Malaka and so ~3-6 weeks. Did that already with a motorcycle many years ago, got the insurance in Songkhla then. What about the tinted windows? and does the insurance cover the same like a first class Thai car insurance in Thailand? A 2-door Pick Up has a higher toll fee at the highways like a normal car, so that's why the question, if a 4X4 4 door Pick Up is considered as a normal car?

Bangkok Bank legally exchanges Ringgit in either direction as does Superrich.

I drove my thai car in March to Penang;

First; You need a LETTER from your local transport office in English (not the purple transport car passport which is ONLY good for Laos) Without it they will not allow you in.

They will make the stickers at the same shop as you get insurance ( on the right after you enter Malaysia) 100 baht /sticker an you need 2

they DO NOT write out the province ( Phuket is PKT). you then need insurance , for my honda it was 800 baht for 30 days. I have never seen a sticker with the full name written out

20 meters further is where you check ur car in.

car windows can be MAX tint 50% ( mine were 29%) and i had a hassle but eventually they let me thru when i told them i would have them removed. They have a meter to test your windows.

I was not stopped so never had to show my thai license to anyone

Have MYR with you for tolls, there are banks past the border or buy before u arrive

also note gas ( 91 gasohol ) is 10 baht/lt Cheaper!!!! there is a station about 3 kms after u enter Malaysia

Driving is easy

Not talked to anyone that has taken their car to Singapore but they leave them at the border. ( to drive downtown you need the easy pass an they are not available to cars outside sing as far as i know.

hi , i am from melaka , malaysia ,

there is some question i can answer you ,

the highway rate in malaysia is count by tyre ,

if you are a 4 tyre then u are normal rate ,

those truck with 6 tyres will count with +50% rate ,

with 8 tyres and above with +100 rate

as the tinted film , our official allowed is 4 side passenger window + back up to 70% , the front wind screen 50%

i not sure if they can summon a foreigner car with dark tinted screen ,

Posted (edited)

my front screen had ZERO tint an my sides/back windows were 29% (71%) according to their meter and they told me 50% max>

Only after being nice an polite was my car allowed in.
