My wife and I were legally married in the US many years ago. We retired to Thailand 3 years ago. She is a dual citizen of Thailand and US. I am a US citizen with a Non Imm type O visa extension based on retirement, which I renew annually, and report my address every 90 days. Our house and property are owned by her, and she has the blue book.

My question: Is there any need or benefit to having our marriage registered at the local amphur? We have not officially done this, and I'm wondering if it makes any difference.

Thanks in advance for any helpful information.

If immigration has not required that you register your marriage and submit a KR 22, then about the only reason would be to insure your rights should your wife pass away and leave property. It would also record your marriage should there ever be a need.

You must be on an extension of stay based upon retirement or you would already know one of the answers. Your marriage would need to be registered to get an extension of stay based upon marriage.

There are probably some legal ramifications for not doing it because your marriage might not be recognized for not doing it in some cases.

Whether you register the marriage or not in Thailand, you are legally married. What the registration does is make it easier to proof that you are married. If you or your spouse passes away that might come in handy. Also if you or your wife would file for a tax reduction it might come in handy.

if you ever want to get an extension of stay based on having a Thai wife, immigration requires that you register the marriage in Thailand.

Some people don't register their marriage because they think that with a foreign husband they cannot own land. But that law was changed and a Thai woman with a foreign husband can now own land.
