Mosquitoes in the area north of the CM runway:

Today, not many.

And much lower than normal.

I have noticed that, during the past few days, the numbers of mosquitoes has dipped by a fair amount, judging by bites I have experienced while being outside during the early evening hours.

The numbers of mosquitoes varies depending on environmental conditions, food supply, growing environment, and probably other variables.

It would be worthwhile to have reports of the waxing and waning of the ferocity of these blood-eating pests, as perceived by members in the Chaing Mai area.

Actually, he's more than likely to be a volunteer to see how soon before he gets infected by a type of Dengue Fever, which is common around Chiang Mai.

When posting and reporting, it might also be useful to state your approximate elevation above ground level.

Some of these CM mosquitoes are able to fly fairly high, and I am not sure how high, or even if Chiang Mai has buildings so high, where the mosquito is unable to fly.

You would think that normally, above the 4th or 5th floors, then you would be fairly safe opening a window at night, even without window screens.

But I have found that on some days there are still plenty.

Someone just mentioned the CM mosquito being a vector for dengue fever inside the city.

I am not so sure this is true, having read reports that this is mostly a problem as you get out of town and travel west.

But I have not read the Dengue Fever reports in full.

I am not anxious to volunteer to become infected with what some call breakbone fever.

Yeah some b... volunteered for me without my consent once and I wouldn't like to get it again.

Dengue is so bad that I was happy the first year I experienced smoky season because the smoke reduced the mosquitoes around my house significantly. That's saying something considering I hate smoky season but dengue is or can be bad bad bad. Some people get it "easy" and just sleep for 4 days with a fever but the hemorrhagic fever is like the movie "Carrie" where blood is coming out of the eyes, ears, nose, every orifice. Yeah I know it's a gruesome visual but hopefully it makes people wear the spray, use the nets, turn on the fans, get the bug spray or whatever you can do to not get bitten.

Thanks for this. I have not used Deet in over 20 years. But if Dengue really is a danger in CM, which I did not realize, then I will be buying the spray and using it. Also I find it very odd that most hotels, guesthouses in CM do not seem to provide window screens. This is one of the first things I noticed. There is no house in Taiwan, or very few, that do not have screens if they are not in a very high high-rise. But in CM, I do not think I recall seeing any window screens.

The Dengue fever problem in Taiwan is mostly in the South, and rarely in the North where I am from. Mosquitoes have always been a real nuisance but never a real health threat. As I say I had thought that Dengue fever in the city of CM was not a significant health risk. Now I know better.

Someone has too much time on their hands.... whistling.gif

Only if he starts naming them.

Thank you. This is also a very good point. The carriers of Dengue is not all mosquitoes. During the season we were always informed in the media which mosquitoes to be on the look-out for.

It really does not take much time to name these "types", or when they are most likely to be flying around:

Probably everyone in CM should go to Wikipedia and read the Dengue Fever Wiki page.

But here is also a good picture of the vector said to be most responsible for Dengue.

You can reach Wikipedia's good introduction by going to this site:

This is the only species I will be naming today.

The city I lived in for some years, namely Townsville in North Queensland (Australia) had outbreaks of dengue, as do most tropical cities where things get a bit slack in keeping anything which holds water.

In Singapore, they really do have Mosquito Busters teams, and they check every household, every apartment, and heaven help you if you've left out a flower pot with water in the saucer. The fines is around S$3000.00 I believe.

The one good thing (if any) about the Dengue Mozzie is that it never travels more than about 150metres from its birth place. So once there is an outbreak of the disease, it's not too difficult to home in on the problem.

The recommended lotion or spray if you're going out is Tropical Strength DEET, or 93% Picardin, the latter being suitable for kids over 12 months old. If memory serves me right, it's a daytime mozzie.

The other name for Dengue Fever is "Break Bone Fever, which sufferers say is well named.
