Many times I have sat at a coffee shop near tukom in pattaya and watched the traffic police blitzing motor bike riders for not wearing helmets. Ive noticed that as soon as they have stopped the bike they begin to write the fine ticket. But I have never seen them receiving any cash from either thais or westerners. I read so often from posters about police and them getting whats called tea money ? so i question if the police are really as corupt as seems to be the common interpretation of their activities on TV.

if there is a captain there they will get a ticket. At any checkpoint there is suppose to be a officer there. i think you had better move to other viewing ares and you might see it happen or drive somewhere on a freeway and you will see it for sure.

In 15 years, I have never been stopped as a pedestrian by nobody. I use Bht-Taxies.

But of course, thundering by with a Harley-Davidson with blood-shut-eyes and the female companion hangs on for dear-live also with blood-shut-eyes= A feast for an alert Police-Officer. = 200 Bht.

Cheap! In Europe one would loose his drivers-licence for 2 years. Plus possible jail sentence.

Cheers.

The few times I got a fine in Pattaya on my scooter I had to pay at the police station, so no tea money.

The 2 times I got correctly fined for speeding in my car on the highway I paid 200 baht each time in tea money and was send on my way.

Been stopped many times on Beach Road outside the police station but had my paper work in order so was send on my way without paying anything.

A police man is not very high paid, so nobody in Thai society are raising eye brows when they demand tea money instead of paying at the police station.

A side note: When I had my Harley, I never got stopped once but many times they saluted me.

Best thing to do is accept the fine then go change 200 baht into satang coins then head off to the police station and watch them count it all .

I have several police friends, They are more corrupt then you know.

They were also the drunkest people at my wedding

Should also point out that I was made to pay 2 policemen 15000 BHT for an incident I should not have even been in the s#$t for, Having police friends does not make you untouchable, not that I tried to call them anyway.

There are good ones of coarse but just ask most Thai people what they think of them.

perhaps part of the problem they are that way is because "if you pay peanuts you get monkeys "
