My Thai wife is expecting a baby in September, to be born in Chiang Mai. We have had the wedding already but I have not yet been to the Australian embassy in Bangkok to sort out the paperwork for legalising our marriage, will be doing that before the baby is born.

What steps have to be taken after the baby is born regarding registering the birth ? The doctor at the hospital told us to bring our marriage paperwork to the hospital before the birth.

Also, will the baby be able to have dual passports later ?

Pretty sure your eligible for the Baby Bonus as well. Not sure if you need to be living here or the likes but worth researching it for 5 grand.

I take the wedding comment as you have not registered marriage at District Office yet so you need the paper from Embassy to do that? Be sure to do before birth to be legal father (or more paperwork later). Believe hospital will register the birth and expect you then take that paperwork to Embassy for of Oz side of getting that passport.

Baby neds to be registred within 15 days of birth at the local amphur, seems the hospital is planning to this this for you. The marriage docuemtns should be enough, as your name will be in Thai their already.

Next you can register the birth with your embassy. Your embassy website will have details on how to do that and how to apply for a passport.

Thanks for the replies, do appreciate that. Missus will be happy about baby bonus, if she believes me. She still thinks I am bs-ing her about getting paid money by the government if you don't have a job, mai jing she says.

If you are working in Thailand and registered with social security in Thailand you'll also get 7000 baht for the birth and a few hundred baht per month till the child is 6 from memory.

But if you aren't living in OZ, you wont be eligible for the BB.

Our baby was born August 2012. We live full time in Thailand. From reading your post it appears that you are living in Thailand. One thing the Bangkok embassy wanted to be submitted when I apply for his citizenship was my full birth certificate. This is not listed on any website. Before you go to the embassy give them a call and get them to list all documents that are needed.

We did not receive the baby bonus.

Yeah, its like being paid to not work.

@ ripstanley, One thing I do have is my original birth certificate, been carrying with me for years, comes in handy for times like this. Will contact the Embassy though before I head down there and find out exactly what they require.

We live in Chiang Mai but I am in Oz at the moment working. My wife was over here for 3 months earlier in the year but wanted to go home, missed her som tum and plah lah too much.

One cannot legally have duel citizenship while being a Thai national , however they do turn a blind eye untill that person is 18yrs old and then can make their own choice of nationality.

That is incorrect.

A person born with two or more nationalities can hold Thai nationality and others, with an option (not an obligation) to choose at age 20. One does not have to choose and most people don't. many of our memebrs are have another nationality besides Thai.

Only for persons applying to become a Thai national through naturalisation is holding another nationality more problematic.

Completely false information.

There is no Thai law that says you cannot have dual nationality.

The law states that at the age of 20 a person can choose to give up their Thai nationality if they want to. That is to prevent a parent from having it taken away.

I've never heard of the government paying people for babies. Why would she get paid money?

Is this real? Australian government pays foreigners to have babies? Is that why there is so many refugees flocking to Australia?

Why woudn't it be real?

Read the eligibilty section. It pays the Australian citizen or PR parent who is the primary carer of the child. They have to be resident in Australia.

You'll only get it if you qualify for FTB.

Note that you can do the citizenship stuff by mail, but have to apply for the passport in person.

The Baby will be Thai and Australian , so can have both Passports

The baby will be Thai, he'll need to apply for "Citizenship by Decent" for the baby before it will gain Australian citizenship.

No need to rush the application, I've got 2 kids, one has dual Australian/Thai citizenship the other only has Thai, just need to get to the embassy. The one with dual citizenship, I applied for it just after she was 1 with no problems. The other one is 1 1/2 now, probably should do it soon.

Both travelled to Australia on their Thai passports and tourist visas (had to get one for the missus anyway) the first time they went. The eldest has her Australian passport now and travels on that. Just be aware that once you apply for citizenship for the child they cannot go to Australia on their Thai passport. They need to get the citizenship approved then you have to go back and apply for their passport after that. You can fill in the passport application and take it with you when you pick up the citizenship certificate, fill in the number on the passport application and drop it off while you are there.
