ToT wtf?

Just started a new teaching job in Kranuan which is a rural town on the outskirts of Khon Kaen, last week myself and my wife went to the ToTs local office and tried sort out some high speed internet for our home but they told us it may take a couple of weeks as they are waiting on some equipment from Bangkok and they will give us a call went it arrives and pay us a visit. So two weeks pass and still no word,I decide to go back to the office and ask what is going on.The same girl sitting behind the counter tells us oh wer sorry the sector is full and we cant do it for you?

The sector is full, what does that mean??

I highly doubt that they cannot do it,are they lazy or just not interested in the business.Id love to know the mentality behind it.

Has anyone else had a similar experience with this company?

Trying to get internet here is like bloody pulling teeth.

First of all do you already have a phone landline at your place?

We're on a waiting list for a landline at one of our places in another part of Issan. It's been over 7 years now. Luckily the other places had phone lines installed when the wife purchased them.

As explained to me, the phone company equipment is old with a limited number of connections. The standard proceedure in our town is to buy a landline off someone willing to sell. The phone company will then transfer that line to your place. Failing that you go on a never ending waiting list or purchase a property with phone line already connected.

The next problem is the old equipment. It can't handle the new internet speeds. The equipment is slowly being upgraded and as upgrades occur the phone company will inform you.

Just to add to the mix you'll get thieves stealing the main phone cables. I've lost count of the number of times the cables to our town were stolen. We rely on dongles for internet now.

We have a telephone line as far as I know but its not connected its just hanging outside the home,I spoke to another farang who lives across the road from me and he is cancelling his internet so he reckons its possible to get ToT to transfer it to our home.I really dont know the ins and out of what is required to connect us to the internet but when other homes around us have it I dont see why its not possible for us to have it too.Someone just saying its full doesnt make any sense to me......

Is TOT your only option ? Does 3BB or True have a presence there ?

totster smile.png

We called True and 3BB and they dont come out this way for Internet so ToT are the only option it seems.

Pain in the arse mate

It sounds like your place had a phone connected but somewhere in the past the service was disconnected and the number reassigned.

As explained to me, the equipment can only handle a set number of active phone numbers. It sounds like your town has reached its limit on assigned numbers.

If your neighbour is offering you his internet you need to ask if he's cancelling his phone too. You need to transfer his phone number across to your place. Once thats done you can get internet on the landline.

Thanks for the information

I never thought trying to get Internet would be such a battle.

If I cant get it sorted I may have to consider moving out and trying to find somewhere with a connection already installed.

I believe what TOT is talking about is their 3G WAN Internet service (I think it's called TOT-Net). As it is a WAN, it has a limited capacity of participants - in this case 30 subscribers. The TOT clerk was trying to tell you that the WAN in your area is fully subscribed.

I live around 10k from Kranuan and had the same problem. Despite having an old telephone line connected to the house, TOT told me that there were no lines available and I would have to get a minimum of 16 people interested before they would do anything. When I proved to them that I still had a working line connected to the house, they simply cut it off and then said "see, we told you that you don't have a line". I was "fortunate" enough to find a neighbour that wasn't using their line and they transferred it to us. I say "fortunate" because the TOT service has been awful with frequent loss of service lasting anything up to two weeks at a time with no refund for loss of service. A better option is to contact AIS and have them put in an aerial, their service costs around the same as TOT (650 baht per month) and is a lot faster.

That full crap doesn't wash with me Ive heard of recent subscribers and people having Internet installed around the town, they told us last week they could do it no problem and now all of a sudden they can't.This service is not 3G it's proper Internet,if I wanted 3G I'd be happy enough using my phone. When your dealing with people who know as little about things as what you do and they are supposed to be the experts it's not easy.

Sounds like an option will look into it thanks.

Around town they are close enough to receive cable. If you are 6 kilometers or so out of town, you are beyond their cable reach (really DSL - not cable). If so, your only option is TOT-Net which is a WAN with limited capacity. What the clerk told you last week is irrelevant; if she misinformed you she will never admit to it.

Well our neighbors all seem to have high speed Internet and they didn't have any problems getting it sorted so there shouldn't be any problems. They don't even have our address and we are about 5 minutes drive from their office so I don't see what the problem is,just seems like laziness on their behalf.

Get somebody you, your wife, or anybody knows with some "influence" and talk to the TOT manager.

That will help you, i can assure through my own personal experience. These ladies sitting there don't know much more than filling out a form for new customers.

Good luck.-wai.gif

YES YES and YES.

I waited 8 long bloody months b/f the "got an opening" for me to have service. Man.... so it's not only you. Weird I know..... but TIT eh??? I doubt I'll ever figure out the way of Thailand or the mentality. I'm reminded of a thought I have from time to time "can't make sense out of non-sense"

Yep it's completely plausable that they don't have enough room at the exchange. As the equipment only supports x amount of internet lines.

My gf and I went into 3BB today, to ask if we could change our existing internet over to them, so that we could hopefully get a faster connection. They gave us the same answer, even though we'd be coming off an existing ToT connection, it still won't work (Which would imply each network uses their own equipment, rather than piggybacking off their competitors), so try just asking ToT and any other fixed line internet companies if they can setup the internet for you, as they might have room on their exchanges.

I went to tot chumphae 3 days ago picked up the forms and returned the day after.

The helpful man said we come in 1-2 days, not come yet.

Could be my fault,we have a new antenna 2 km's away,i was thinking it was tot.

Went to look at base station and had ais written on it.

Think will go and see them and who comes first wins.smile.png

Hope someone will come at end of day.sad.png

ToT ran cable pass my place about a year ago. I went in and was told I would get a flyer in the mail within a month. Never got anything. I went back in an asked about getting hooked up. I was told they would start as soon as they had ten people that wanted hooking up. I asked to put my name on the list and fill out the paper work--- no list, not taking applications yet blink.png

I have decided to move out and find a home with high speed internet already installed,if I had of known tot were going to be such a nightmare to deal with I would have done that to begin with.Obviously things are a little different over here you can't make a call and have somebody come out to you within the week like back home which is a pain in the arse.Good luck with your Internet I hope you get it sorted in the end I feel your pain.

I don't know about the phone-land lines. I live in a small village between Korat and Buriram where nobody has a land line as far as I know. But 2 years ago TOT installed a Wi-Fi broadband antenna near my village, probably because of an internet café that was starting up just then. So they came to my door and offered me an internet connection with up to 16 Mb speed. I was delighted.

But they couldn`t give me more than 6 Mb to start with because they were trying out the network. After a few months they gave me 10 Mb and it is working well exept from a few breakdowns a week ;)

Although 10 Mb is enough for me, I asked for a 16 Mb connection. They said that they didn`t want to give me that because most of the other subscribers in my village only has 1 Mb and they would get jealous.....lol.

They really to have a funny attitude about things :D
