URUMQI, CHINA (BNO NEWS) -- At least thirteen people were confirmed dead after a tourist bus accident in northwestern China, local authorities said Tuesday.

The passenger bus, carrying 36 tourists, was traveling near the city of Changji in China's Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region, when the driver lost control and plunged into a valley at around 5 p.m. local time.

A local traffic police officer, Shi Rui, told the state-run Xinhua news agency that thirteen people had died, while the other 23 were wounded. Emergency teams rushed to the scene and transported the injured to local hospitals, but their health condition was not immediately known.

The exact cause of the accident was not detailed, but authorities believe heavy fog in the area ultimately caused the driver's poor visibility.
